The Sunlit Night Reviews

Too many threads tangle together without forming a pattern, and while there are flickers of feeling scattered through, its a shame that these lovely fragments of life never make up a whole.

It does feature an appealing lead performance from Slate, and is earnest and honest in its largely successful attempt to translate creative thinking onto the screen in equally creative ways.

Slate does a fantastic job with the material she is given and the scenery is beautiful, but the "The Sunlit Night" fails to shine. It's a dim, dull tale.

The rambling nature of [The Sunlit Night's] synopsis is a decent mirror to the film itself, a collection of scenes that never coalesce into anything greater.

Unoriginal, cliched narrative with an unlikeable and infuriating main character. Underdeveloped supporting characters and poor dialogue. Plus a really unimaginative soundtrack of depressing indie songs.

...as much as Slate is a vibrant and charismatic force, The Sunlit Night is just too poorly conceived to be taken seriously.

Jenny Slate brings charm to a story that otherwise may have been devoid of any realistic or interesting human behaviour.

It's a beautifully made film, with an engaging central exploration of identity. The second half does overload the film however, and some of the grace of the central journey becomes lost.

There are gentle comedies. Then there is The Sunlit Night, a comedy so gentle, it should come with a "do not consume while operating heavy machinery" warning.

An exquisitely rendered tale of an artist's loneliness and starting over again.

More likely to inspire tourism than comments about its content, themes, and what have you, "The Sunlit Night" sure is pretty, but that's about it. (Full Content Review for Parents - Profanity, Nudity, Sexual Content, etc. - also Available)

There's enough charm and whimsy for the story to escape coming across as too predictable... The Sunlit Night is a light and occasionally messy story of discovery, and Slate's performance anchors it all.

It's a lot duller than it should be ... Another thing about the movie that's a missed opportunity is how little of Norwegian culture it shows, except for over-the-top Viking stereotypes that are played for laughs.

Its gently loping pace and continual sideroads may seem a bit random, but it's both funny and surprisingly involving.

The Sunlit Night is a ponderous, pretentious dud

I can easily imagine people who wouldn't like it, but there is something beautiful about how perfectly it locates a feeling of confusion, ambivalence and grief.

Full Review | Original Score: 3.5/4 | Jul 23, 2020

Despite all indicators pointing to romantic comedy, the film is devoid of romance. Slate leads an exceptional cast and there are funny moments but the film gets lost in translation from the novel.

Full Review | Original Score: 2.5/4 | Jul 21, 2020

The Sunlit Night feels like an event horizon, starting and ending just where we would expect it to, while the entirety of its middle section could be collapsed completely since it never succeeds on any of the fronts it professes to.

Full Review | Original Score: 1.5/5 | Jul 20, 2020

I can really get behind Jenny Slate's latest project as it sheds entirely new light on her talents, quite literally.

Full Review | Jul 20, 2020

The Sunlit Night feels somewhat incomplete, less a full-blown oil painting than a sketch skimmed over with a veil of watercolor. But Slate's vibrance shines right through no matter what.
