Critics Consensus

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is Wonder Man, turning in a sly performance alongside an equally wonderful Ben Kingsley in this low-stakes superhero fare that boasts high-hearted personal drama as its winning factor.

A satire about struggling actors and the ludicrous Hollywood inequality they’re trying to get around doesn’t sound like a particularly original idea, but when you plug it into the dour world of Marvel superheroes it’s actually a welcome change of pace. Go to Full Review

The actors’ chemistry and undeniable bromance is a great reason to watch, but this is also an entertaining and low-stakes story that doesn’t require mass MCU viewing or knowledge to fully enjoy. Go to Full Review
Peter Travers The Travers Take 4d

It’s a different kind of Marvel epic. Special effects take a backseat to laughs as Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Sir Ben Kingsley spoof egomaniac actors who learn it’s better to stop chasing fame and be in it for the love of the game. Go to Full Review

This series does not focus on superpowers or action. Instead, it is centered on passion, creativity, empowerment, and a love for acting, all presented through a satirical lens. Go to Full Review

Apart from a few unwarranted theatrics, Wonder Man is void of anything Marvel-like, which ultimately becomes its greatest and most welcome trait. Go to Full Review

D-LO @himotoma 1h I've been reading Wonder Man comics since West Coast Avengers and collected his solo series—I still have them. So when I learned the character was race-swapped, I was very disappointed. However, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II did an amazing job as Simon. Thanks to great writing, it was just Yahya playing Simon Williams, who happens to be Black. The script never highlighted his race—it treated him purely as Simon Williams. That's the right way to do a race swap. His acting won me over completely. Ben Kingsley is an incredible actor and stole every scene. Sorry, Yahya—that doesn't diminish your great work, but damn, Ben is that good. Why only 3.5 stars? The show was watchable and above average, but some episodes pacing dragged and i had to fast forward. The Josh Gad episode was horrible and added nothing, IMO. We also needed way more of Wonder Man as a hero—there was practically none. As a superhero show it gets a 1 star See more silas v @sensit 1h I loved the route they take here See more Dan D. @danwithavan 1h Only wish it was longer See more Henry G @Hguerrero33 2h This show is so boring, fell asleep during every episode. All you 5 stars recommending a snooze fest, but I'm sure it's all the same fans criticizing all other good Marvel movies. Only thing that probably saves it is Ben Kingsley. See more Stephen C @bob25009 2h 8 funny Disney+ episodes. See more Jennifer K. @Jennxs 2h This show has everything. I’d honestly gotten bored with Marvel, but the characters, the story, everything just keeps me hooked. Relatable, flawed and ultimately inspiring characters propelled comic book heroes to mass popularity. This show captures that perfectly. And, yes, the acting is wonderful. See more Read all reviews
