What to Know

Critics Consensus

Boldly unconventional and refreshingly honest, Diary of a Teenage Girl is a frank coming-of-age story that addresses its themes -- and its protagonist -- without judgment.

The Diary of a Teenage Girl is a rare frank look at adolescent sexuality from a female perspective. Beautifully acted by all. Go to Full Review

With female sexuality onscreen, especially young women's, we're often presented with a binary: Is it exploitative or empowering? Damaging or liberating? Depressing or joyful? The Diary of a Teenage Girl asks why it can't be all of these things and more. Go to Full Review

Shocking but genuine, poignant and hilarious, Diary of a Teenage Girl could well become one of the more memorable entries in the Sundance Film Festival's U.S. competition. Go to Full Review

Heller's screenplay and direction also keep Minnie firmly at the centre of this narrative, her drawings and doodlings playing a key role in the telling of her story. Bold, brassy and brilliant... Go to Full Review

Told from a teenage girl's unfiltered point of view, this is not an easy-to-watch movie, but the uncomfortable moments raise important and highly relevant questions. Go to Full Review

Melissa M. @Melimuns3 6h I thought this was a really good movie but I could’ve predicted the ending from the beginning. But good watch for sure! See more Blue @NK2011 1d Although yes, it is a very frank film, I found it sickening how many find its ending as a celebratory coming-of-age instead of sitting down and think deeply about how traumatizing and disturbing the whole story is, and how it makes your stomach wants to spill today's breakfast/lunch/dinner. I mean, Minnie is 15 HELLO??? She's my age, gone through bunch of nasty things, slept with many men including her 35-year-old mother's boyfriend, Monroe, has the desire to sleep with even Fred that she visited in the mental institution, took drugs, has no moral compass whatsoever, and yet the writer said it is not about her, but about ALL girls. Again, as if the content in the graphic novel and movie has been experienced by all girls and not an abnormal, unsettling thing. NEVER HAVE I EVER gone through a single thing Minnie had, not even ever think about letting it happen although I, too, feel the need to feel loved and validated like Minnie at this immature age of 15. So refreshing to see a real depiction of a female growing into a woman. Love the comic drawings as much now as when they were new. See more Read all reviews
