Kevin L @Lakeman Dec 26 A minor work in the history of film, "Leonie" skirts the cinema world of Merchant Ivory, historical drama, and biography. Built on the lives of Leonie Gilmour, Yone Noguchi, and their son Isamu, it deals with the artistry of the coupls along with the cultural norms of America and Japan in the early 20th century and the distinct difficulties they caused. I felt the movie fell into melodrama at times. There are moments that feel rather trite, others that felt like lazy cliches that a more skilled, patient director and/or writer would handle in a manner that made this story more its own distinct work that covered such themes/ideas. But Mortimer does fine work in the titular role. Hendricks is surprisingly good as friend and classmate Catherine. 3 stars See more Read all reviews
