02/02/2016 This little diamond from Taiwan inaugurated the new wave cinema of the country in the 1980s (No, it's not a 2011 movie Rotten Tomatoes! Get your database straight!). In our time is an omnibus film consisting of 4 parts. All of them deal with life in modern Taiwan. All directors focuses on a young genereration which are striving with school, love, standing-out, work. There was a lyricism in all of the stories and a bittersweet taste of humour accompanied by slow American music or piano sonats which accentuated the melancholy of the everyday life in Taiwan. I must admit that I am not aware of the cinema of Taiwan before the new wave but I assume, as all national cinemas, it must have been around war, heroes, history, adventure and kung-fu . With the introduction of the new wave by directors such as Hou Hsiao hsien taiwanese cinema reached a maturity by focusing its lens on real people, and familiar daily thematics.
