Amy N Jul 11 The title says it all, DIRECTOR by Night. While many folks are used to the “assembled” features, this doc follows Michael Giacchino and who he has become within the Marvel universe, as a composer and now a director. The heart that has gone into showing who he is, where he’s coming from, lends itself to a, literal, behind the camera approach to a man most folks would recognize by his music before his face. If you’re looking for an in depth behind-the-scenes of “Werewolf By Night”, you won’t find that focus here. While most folks would find that a detriment, I found the content to be genuine and endearing. A affectionate letter to the man who has brought us to tears and cheers with his keen musical mind and his fervor for the industry he has loved since a child. Lastly, shout-out to Mama Giacchino (and his brother Anthony) for teaching me how to pronounce their last name correctly. I am not ashamed to state I have been mis-pronouncing it for years. It's less about the making of Werewolf By Night and more about Michael Giacchino's story and background, but still manages to be enjoyable, especially for non-enthusiasts of film scores — and thus not familiar with Michael Giacchino's previous work —. I truly hope to see Michael Giacchino directing again in the future. See more jacob b 12/30/2022 A different documentary than the ones under the "Marvel Studios - Assembled" line-up, the stand-alone Director by Night offers an insightful look at what it was like for renowned composer Michael Giacchino to direct his first Hollywood project while also showing us just how much passion he has for movies with old home movies of both him growing up and some delightfully cheesy Super 8 films. It does have the disadvantage of leaving the actual Werewolf by Night BTS out-of-focus but on the whole, this offered a nice change of pace from the rest of Phase 4's BTS Disney+ featurettes. I wonder if, simply because of the "Special Presentation" branding, the GOTG Holiday Special will receive the same treatment as this One-Shot story. See more Pamela F 11/14/2022 Unlike the usual Marvel "making of" specials, this was a look at the director and had very little to do with the wonderful special, "Werewolf by Night." I could understand a look at the director's bio - his credits, his influences, etc., - but this was full of personal, old home movies, chats with the parents and completely devoid of anything contemporary to this first outing as a director. He must have done something right because the show itself is really interesting and fun but we never see much of his process or the usual backstage methods for filming. We spent our time fast forwarding through the endless Super8 teenage "Let's put on a movie" footage and scenes of him going to and from the studio. I hope Disney uses him again for projects but don't let his brother do the "Assembled" film ever again. Please. See more Read all reviews
