Joe Lozito

Tomatometer-approved critic
Biography:

Big Picture Big Sound co-founder Joe Lozito has been a fan and critic of movies since a very early age. At the age of 10, he was keeping his movie ticket stubs in a photo album with what would later be called “capsule reviews” written underneath. Why he was seeing so many movies at that age is better left to the therapist’s couch. As Joe became more of an authority (in his own mind anyway) on film, he made the transition to online movie review publishing in 1998 in the form of joelozito.com. In 2005, that archive of material put the “Big Picture” in Big Picture Big Sound. Joe has also dabbled in music and acting in New York City and has, like most critics, a screenplay or two in his back pocket. When he’s not staring at a screen in a darkened room, Joe enjoys playing guitar, karate, golf and scuba diving. However, he mostly watches movies. Mostly.

Van Helsing (2004) 24% 0/4 EDIT “Van Helsing itself is an unholy mix of exhumed ideas from a generation of monster movies. Unlike the monster, though, it never comes to life.” – Big Picture Big Sound Oct 31, 2018 Full Review The Others (2001) 84% 3/4 EDIT “Mr. Amenábar, who not only wrote and directed but also composed the score for the film, masterfully creates and atmosphere of suffocating repression.” – Big Picture Big Sound Oct 29, 2018 Full Review Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) 93% 3.5/4 EDIT “I'll cut to the chase: yes, it lives up to the hype. J.J. Abrams has created a film that stays true to the original series while updating it for a new generation.” – Big Picture Big Sound Dec 18, 2015 Full Review Steve Jobs (2015) 85% 3/4 EDIT “An ingenious structure and Aaron Sorkin's typically sharp dialogue elevate this exploration of the Apple icon beyond the standard biopic.” – Big Picture Big Sound Oct 8, 2015 Full Review The Martian (2015) 91% 3/4 EDIT “If you enjoyed Andy Weir's exceedingly detailed novel, you'll certainly appreciate seeing it brought to the screen in all its geek glory. It's like science porn.” – Big Picture Big Sound Sep 29, 2015 Full Review Straight Outta Compton (2015) 89% 3/4 EDIT “This biopic doesn't come close to matching the impact of the titular album, but the material is so riveting that it's nearly enough.” – Big Picture Big Sound Aug 14, 2015 Full Review Entourage (2015) 32% 2.5/4 EDIT “An almost perfect recreation of the HBO series - just a little bigger, longer and more desperate to justify its existence.” – Big Picture Big Sound Jun 2, 2015 Full Review Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) 75% 3/4 EDIT “With Marvel's universe expanding and intertwining at an ever increasing rate, "Age of Ultron" feels less like a sequel than a cosmic event.” – Big Picture Big Sound Apr 30, 2015 Full Review The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014) 59% 2.5/4 EDIT “Rarely has a final battle been so anticlimactic (or padding been so apparent).” – Big Picture Big Sound Dec 16, 2014 Full Review Interstellar (2014) 73% 3/4 EDIT “Christopher Nolan's sci-fi epic is a beautiful, ambitious, ultimately flawed film about nothing less than the survival of the human race.” – Big Picture Big Sound Nov 6, 2014 Full Review Snowpiercer (2013) 94% 3/4 EDIT “If you can buy the premise of this Bong Joon-ho graphic novel adaptation, you're in for a good ride.” – Big Picture Big Sound Jul 6, 2014 Full Review Godzilla (2014) 76% 2/4 EDIT “Ambitious and reverent reboot may not manage to satisfy either purists or modern moviegoing audiences.” – Big Picture Big Sound May 16, 2014 Full Review The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) 51% 2.5/4 EDIT “The first sequel in this prematurely rebooted franchise is freed from the shackles of the origin story but still exists in the shadow of the Raimi movies.” – Big Picture Big Sound May 1, 2014 Full Review Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) 90% 2.5/4 EDIT “The First Avenger's second outing is a third-rate conspiracy thriller, but Chris Evans and company give it their all.” – Big Picture Big Sound Apr 3, 2014 Full Review The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013) 74% 3/4 EDIT “This second "Hobbit" film is a worthy entry in the Jackson/Tolkien canon. But after almost three hours in the theater, having a incomplete story feels like a cheat.” – Big Picture Big Sound Dec 12, 2013 Full Review Gravity (2013) 96% 3.5/4 EDIT “If you can get past the heartstring-tugging, the amped up soundtrack, and George Clooney's relentless Clooneyness, this stunning space saga is the very reason we go to the movies.” – Big Picture Big Sound Oct 3, 2013 Full Review Riddick (2013) 58% 1/4 EDIT “As you're watching this third Riddick installment, you can actually feel the character's potential being wasted, along with precious minutes of your time.” – Big Picture Big Sound Sep 5, 2013 Full Review Europa Report (2013) 81% 2.5/4 EDIT “Beautifully-crafted sci-fi entry in the "found footage" genre is both as wondrous and monotonous as deep space travel.” – Big Picture Big Sound Aug 2, 2013 Full Review The Wolverine (2013) 71% 2.5/4 EDIT “This second attempt to bring the "X-Men" character to a solo franchise moves along at a brisk clip but never finds its footing as either a brooding return to graphic novel form or a rousing actioner.” – Big Picture Big Sound Jul 25, 2013 Full Review Man of Steel (2013) 57% 3.5/4 EDIT “Zack Snyder's epic adaptation gives this generation a Superman movie to call its own. Call it "Superman Begins".” – Big Picture Big Sound Jun 13, 2013 Full Review This Is the End (2013) 82% 3/4 EDIT “It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel high.” – Big Picture Big Sound Jun 11, 2013 Full Review The Hangover Part III (2013) 21% 1.5/4 EDIT “This (fingers crossed) final installment of the stillborn franchise is as bleakly unfunny and tone-deaf as its predecessors. It succeeds in only one thing: making you want to get drunk enough to forget you saw it.” – Big Picture Big Sound May 24, 2013 Full Review Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) 84% 2.5/4 EDIT “This ill-named sequel plays more like a transitional story than its own film.” – Big Picture Big Sound May 14, 2013 Full Review The Great Gatsby (2013) 49% 2.5/4 EDIT “Baz Luhrmann's delicious visuals struggle to enliven a fairly standard retelling of the Fitzgerald classic.” – Big Picture Big Sound May 9, 2013 Full Review Iron Man 3 (2013) 79% 3/4 EDIT “The third time's a charmer for this Marvel franchise, thanks to a clever script and, of course, its inimitable star.” – Big Picture Big Sound May 3, 2013 Full Review
