The Truth About Charlie Reviews
The film is hilariously indifferent to the conundrum of the plot, but it is sustained, just about, by the buoyancy of its mood.
Full Review | Dec 19, 2022
A bad remake of a good movie.
Full Review | Original Score: 2/5 | Dec 29, 2010
Demme's movie is so benign--he likes all his characters, even the villains--it feels like a game of "let's pretend." It's a movie for movie lovers--playful, hip and light as a feather.
Full Review | Nov 1, 2007
I realize that Mark Wahlberg is not Cary Grant, but shouldn't there be some compensating reason for his presence in this movie?
Full Review | Jan 16, 2003
The truth about Charlie is that there's so much more here than you've been led to believe.
Full Review | Original Score: 5/5 | Dec 27, 2002
The truth is that The Truth About Charlie gets increasingly tiresome.
Full Review | Nov 9, 2002
It's a forgery that diminishes not only the originality and pleasure of the film it copies, but also the entire school of filmmaking it wants to emulate.
Full Review | Nov 6, 2002
May not be and should not be everyone's cup of tea, but at the end of it, I felt a guilty affection for all its participants.
Full Review | Nov 6, 2002
The affectionate loopiness that once seemed congenital to Demme's perspective has a tough time emerging from between the badly dated cutesy-pie mystery scenario and the newfangled Hollywood post-production effects.
Full Review | Oct 29, 2002
The Truth About Charlie isn't stupid or dull, but it has just too many flaws for me to recommend it.
Full Review | Oct 29, 2002
At once listless and overheated, giddy and utterly zipless.
Full Review | Oct 25, 2002
An uneven but engaging remake of the 1963 romantic caper Charade.
Full Review | Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 25, 2002
Charade was magic; Charlie isn't, but it's a pleasant Paris-flavored treat, beret or no.
Full Review | Original Score: 3/4 | Oct 25, 2002
It's a sometimes interesting remake that doesn't compare to the brilliant original.
Full Review | Original Score: 2/4 | Oct 25, 2002
I just sort of went along for the quasi-enjoyable ride in The Truth About Charlie, crappy and nonsensical as it may be on the whole.
Full Review | Oct 25, 2002
Demme can't sustain the fizz, but seeing a real filmmaker try and fall short is still more fun than watching a hack hit the mark.
Full Review | Original Score: 2/4 | Oct 25, 2002
A movie that, rather than skip along the Seine, more or less slogs its way through soggy Paris, tongue uncomfortably in cheek.
Full Review | Original Score: 1.5/4 | Oct 25, 2002
Entertaining but instantly forgettable.
Full Review | Original Score: 2.5/4 | Oct 25, 2002
Not counting a few gross-out comedies I've been trying to forget, this is the first film in a long time that made me want to bolt the theater in the first 10 minutes.
Full Review | Original Score: D+ | Oct 25, 2002
Where a melting little meringue is wanted, Demme delivers a big, doughy sticky-bun of a movie, stuffed with little currants of other films.
