Woodstock: Three Days That Defined a Generation Reviews

... For one golden summer at least, there really was a beautiful truce in America. A generation united under a freaky rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” and got by with a little help from their friends.

There is so much great footage, it could have been done just the other week, because everyone looks exactly the same. Every festival today has some sort of debt to Woodstock in some way.

Whereas the original Woodstock movie was essentially a concert film, this PBS Woodstock documentary attempts to fill in a lot of the behind-the-scenes blanks, much like bonus commentary does on a home-video release.

If you enjoy this Woodstock doc as much as I did, you may want to check into the growing library of concert memorabilia, including the three-hour-plus concert film and record album.

It does bring a freshness to a story that we've heard a million times.

The promotors lost their shirt but oh, what they created. Fascinating stuff.

Some optimism is required to allow for the possibility that the chaos of Woodstock offered a template for anything, but, if you inhale deeply, the film just about achieves this microcosmic ambition.

Woodstock has a complicated legacy and a lot of myths surrounding it, but Woodstock: Three Days That Defined A Generation decided to go with the story that most of us know by heart. But it's still an entertaining watch, if not overly informative.

Arrogantly infuriating... Baby Boomers didn't change the world at Woodstock, or create a New Man... It's sad that, 50 years later, they still can't tell the difference.

It was a singular experience, and never before seen footage provides unprecedented in-the-crowd realism.

Coinciding with the fiftieth anniversary of Woodstock, Three Days That Defined a Generationis a mostly surface level look into the famous festival that did, in fact, leave lasting ramifications across arts, politics, and society.

Woodstock: Three Days That Defined a Generation offers rain-soaked memories and affectionate recollections of how it began and ended in a neat-and-clean 97 minutes.

Coming as it does so close on the heels of Netflix's awesome "Fyre" doc, this chronicle of a music festival boondoggle ain't so groovy, man.

Full Review | Original Score: C | Jun 16, 2019

...far superior to the 1970 Oscar (R)-winning documentary because it tells the entire story and doesn't spend so much time on the music.

If you're coming to "Three Days that Defined a Generation" for the music, you'll likely be disappointed.

Woodstock is by far the most informative documentary about the event that I have ever seen.

Full Review | Original Score: 9/10 | Jun 7, 2019

This film offers a moving remembrance of the people, music, and extraordinary circumstances that aligned to produce a cultural touchstone.

Full Review | May 31, 2019

With its brisk, 95-minute running time, it's necessarily a CliffNotes take on the event, and Goodman's emphasis is the not-unremarkable fact that the ginormous, rain-soaked cluster--- was pulled off without any deaths or outbreaks of violence.

Full Review | May 30, 2019

Goodman never lets the music breathe, even slapping narration over Hendrix's masterful version of the national anthem, one of the great political statements in rock history.

The peacefully defiant festival was one of the key cultural events in American history. Woodstock: Three Days that Defined a Generation does it justice.
