See more Kevin P @RT55971421 Oct 22 A very entertaining and intriguing classic monster movie that pioneered all the rules and tropes of the modern werewolf mythology (weakness to silver & wolfbane, nighttime transformations under the autumn moon, becoming a werewolf through a bite transmission, etc.). The lead actor is very charming and funny as Larry, who's more of a likable and sympathetic counterpart to someone like Dr Jekyll when it comes to his beastly transformations. You really feel for him when he's desperately trying to make sense of it all and warn everyone. The side characters are mostly decent. I liked the actors playing father and love interest. Bela Lugosi also plays a fun cameo as the gypsy fortune teller who becomes the unintentional catalyst for the horror show. The creature effects for the Wolfman are great, especially for the time. The foggy woods, intricate mansion, and old European village all make for a great setting. Like most Universal Monster Movies, the film can sometimes meander a little in the middle and then feel very rushed with its abrupt ending. But that's part of the charm I suppose thanks to its short runtime. It's still a very well-directed and entertaining monster mystery movie and hugely inspirational for werewolves everywhere. So, I decided to watch The Wolf Man after watching the new 2025 Wolf Man in theaters. I can definitely be impressed with the make up visuals and werewolf look they ionized from this film, but it is really hard for me to get over how much of a creep, Larry Talbot, played by Lon Chaney Jr., is. This is quick, solid storytelling. Ages of the cast are questionable but you just have to overlook that. Watched on DVD. See more Nim T @nimtse Jun 14 The horror in this film is not like the standard of spooking a person out. The Wolf Man had a clear story that allowed Lon Chaney Jr to bring the character to life. The usage of music and the black and white screens bring the ability to continue watching the film easier. The makeup applied for Chaney as the Wolf Man, followed by the visual effects of changing him from Wolf Man back to self was perfect timing. The movie had some scenes being on the boring side, but nevertheless is fine for a 70 minute film. Looking forward to explore more films of the 1930s and 40s. See more Read all reviews
