Critics Consensus

It's admittedly uneven, but Who Invited Them benefits from writer-director Duncan Birmingham's playful approach to genre tropes.

Birmingham does a good job teasing the audience with the possibility of violence, while coyly withholding the orgy of bloodshed that seems sure to explode at some point. Go to Full Review

Andrew S @Andrewfev 4d The setup is something you’ve seen plenty of times before, and it doesn’t really do anything new with it. You can tell where it’s going pretty early on, so there’s no real tension or surprise. It just plays out exactly how you expect. What really took me out of it was how it looked. The filming felt cheap—almost like it was shot on a phone—and not in a good way. Flat lighting, awkward framing, and nothing visually interesting to pull you in. It actually makes everything feel more dull rather than building any atmosphere. The editing is just as rough. There are clunky cuts and awkward transitions that don’t flow properly, giving it a really shoddy, thrown-together feel. For something that relies on pacing and tension, that hurts it a lot. There’s barely any noticeable score either. Silence can work, but here it just feels like something is missing. Scenes that should feel tense don’t land. By the end, it’s just forgettable. Nothing stands out, and there’s no real payoff. See more Melissa L @Agent99 Nov 1 I thought it was weird, very creepy, and had an inconclusive bad ending. See more Lucas A @lucaswa1 Aug 4 Predictable, but I really enjoyed it! Some moments made me very uncomfortable which I always love, and it was actually really funny at certain points. See more Craig W. @CJWolfe27 Jul 18 I was very pleasantly surprised with this. A little predictable, but put together very well. Not too long, good movie, definitely worth a watch See more Christian C @RT19561793 Jul 18 Shockingly good. This movie was funny in ways that most “thrillers” or “horror” can usually only simulate. The “big reveal” is pretty easily predicted, but that’s not really the important part. See more Sean D @RT20827224 Jun 29 Caught this one on Shudder today and greatly enjoyed it! Awesome blend of wicked humor and horrific tension building See more Read all reviews
