What to Know

Critics Consensus

Stranding Ice Cube in an inept screensaver with wall-to-wall product placement, War of the Worlds will make audiences consider giving peace a chance instead.

To some, War of the Worlds is a branded empty package; to others, it’s a sci-fi guilty pleasure treasure that proves the old adage right.

The plot is ludicrous, the filmmaking sloppy, the performances disconnected. It’s a true desktop disaster. Go to Full Review

Don't let the noise fool you. This corporation-coddling remake is so unparseable you'll actively wish it were worse -- or just over. Go to Full Review

The screenplay by Kenny Golde and Marc Hyman gets overcomplicated because they’re desperately reaching for something to spice up Ice Cube staring at a computer at his desk. Go to Full Review

Where other films built around screens like Searching and Missing were able to make what could be a bit of gimmick work, War of the Worlds is just a dull disaster from start to finish. Go to Full Review

War of the Worlds attempts to boldly adapt H.G. Wells’ sci-fi classic for the modern age, the way that your digestive system boldly adapts a five-course dinner into excrement. Go to Full Review

This was painful. It was boring, had terrible graphics and performances, and felt overlong despite being less than an hour and a half. Go to Full Review

Maurice S @Tungdor77 12h Solid sci-fi entertainment for in between This movie had been on my watchlist for a long time. Due to many negative reviews, I was skeptical and kept postponing it. When I finally watched it, I found it quite okay and entertaining. Instead of repeating the familiar formula, the film takes a more modern approach, touching on themes like technology, surveillance, and society’s dependence on them. This works reasonably well, although the heavy product placement and advertising are clearly noticeable and sometimes distracting. The visual effects are solid, and Ice Cube and Eva Longoria deliver decent performances that fit the film’s restrained tone. This is definitely not a masterpiece, but as a movie for in between, especially one that feels different from earlier versions, it works. I find the ratings too harsh — as long as you don’t go in with false expectations, it’s perfectly watchable. Final verdict: A movie for in between. See more Fishsticks_ @Fishsticks_ 4d This movie is so bad that you'll either find it hilarious, or entirely unbearable. It's still crazy how little effort was put into it, it's not like amazon is lacking the resources lol.
