Among the wave of slashers that followed was Valentine (2001), a film that I think is one of the most underrated entries of the era—and it just so happens to be set around my favorite holiday (and birthday), Valentine’s Day. The story begins with a flashback to a middle school Valentine’s Day dance, where an awkward, nerdy boy works up the courage to ask several popular girls to dance. Each cruelly rejects him, and when one girl falsely claims he assaulted her, a group of bullies viciously beats him, leaving him humiliated. Fast-forward 13 years, and those same girls are being hunted down one by one by a trench coat–wearing killer in a chilling Cupid mask. Before each murder, the victims receive threatening Valentine’s cards, tying the holiday theme cleverly into the horror. Valentine delivers some creative, holiday-inspired kills, a creepy villain design, and a story with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing until the end.
