Truth Reviews

This is a disappointment: not terrible by any means, but difficult to defend as any serious measure as good.

Full Review | Original Score: 5/10 | Jun 19, 2024

A film that will incite conversation about the state of journalism today.

Cate Blanchett gives a career-best performance as a journalist torn apart by a vital mistake...

Adds unnecessary melodrama to what should have been an even-handed look at the inner workings of the fourth estate.

Full Review | Original Score: 3/5 | Mar 4, 2021

Truth would rather pay lip service to big ideals like the commercialization of the news as a means of distracting us from the real truth...

Full Review | Jan 15, 2021

It's a solidly-made movie, but you may come away from it wondering who, if anyone, has a claim on truth in the 21st century.

Truth boasts another juggernaut by Cate Blanchett that is buoyed by an incredibly strong adaptation of [Mary] Mapes' book, eliciting all the intricate minutiae and ethics of not only investigative journalism but the absurdity of corporate blinders.

[James] Vanderbilt directs the feature with class and a keen eye for detail, while his screenplay is excellent and consistent throughout.

While it's not flawless, having Robert Redford and Cate Blanchett onscreen should make us curious at least to see and hear the Truth.

Even if Truth hadn't opened in the same year as Spotlight, its superficial grandstanding about rigged systems and agendas would feel like a production staffed by understudies.

Full Review | Original Score: 1.5/5 | Jun 24, 2019

Taking itself so seriously, Truth may not score big with all cinemagoers, but you'd be hard pushed to not at least be reasonably won over by the excellent ensemble cast of characters.

Full Review | Original Score: 3/5 | Apr 10, 2019

Far from taking any risks, Truth is not the biographical account Rather and Mapes deserved.

Full Review | Original Score: 2/5 | Apr 8, 2019

Something we've seldom seen in movies is the chaotic hustle of a TV news production, something Truth depicts thrillingly.

Full Review | Original Score: 7/10 | Feb 28, 2019

An intriguing examination into media and government officials anchored by strong work from Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford.

Full Review | Original Score: B | Jan 17, 2019

What is sure in calling this film Truth is setting it up for a fall that no stellar cast can save it from. Cate Blanchett comes at it with a fiery passion but in truth unless you know the whole story it is just someone's version of events.

It's a good movie!

Full Review | Jun 13, 2018

Decent enough performances from Blanchett and Redford aside, Truth feels like ancient history with a heavy whiff of worthiness about it.

Full Review | Original Score: 3/5 | Apr 9, 2018

The trouble is, in recounting Mapes' case, it winds up throwing her back under the bus.

Full Review | Original Score: 3/5 | Nov 5, 2017

The first half is tough going but once things start to unravel it certainly picks up speed.

Full Review | Oct 24, 2017

Overall Truth is a strong film, examining the side of the story that wasn't really considered at the time and fueled by Blanchett's stellar performance.
