Although the facts seem improbable, we now know that the Catholic Church did operate institutions for "troubled " young girls where all kind of abuse took place. See more William V @WilliamMatthewConnolly Mar 16 Definitely one of the greatest movies I've ever seen comparable in truthfulness and compassion to Doctor Zhivago, depicting everlasting love of a man and a woman and the ignorance and cruelty of clerics, medical gurus, physicians, nurses, over diagnosing the healthy, subjecting them to heavy drugs and electroshocks, violent locals who kill out of partisanship, and war heroes who sacrifice all for loved ones. for one loved most of all his young bride to be, and for that young woman's unparalleled bravery to stand by her man and to reject conformity with the close minded society, the paralyzing fundamentalist strict Christian clerics, and the medieval cruel mentality of psychiatrists, which did great harm, misunderstanding human nature, averting eyes when love, loyalty, truth slaps them in the face. Yes, this is Doctor Zhivago set in Ireland during World War II until the 1960s when a young doctor and nurse save an aged mother, as the emerald isle is reborn, awash true, free at last. It was tragically sad, emotionally beautiful, true love story vibes with deep passion and complete corruption and heartbreak on a huge scale. Its a weepy movie but has all the other emotions tied in also with a great story line and tremendous ending. See more Murray C @RT17687985 May 12 When a volunteer Irish WW2 pilot is shot down and miraculously ejects a few hundred yards from his own home town, is taken in undetected by a local girl and later emerges in full dress uniform which came from who-knows-where, you know you're dealing with filmmakers for whom a realistic plot is unimportant. Later, when a heavily pregnant woman flees at fast pace from pursuers, swims several hundred metres across choppy open seawater, and then gives birth in under a minute, you know you're dealing with writers, directors and actors who have never known a pregnant lady. Couple these unbelievable plot devices with a cliche-ridden story that makes no sense whatsoever, and you'll see the preposterously unlikely ending coming a mile off. If the soporific pace hasn't put you to sleep by then, that is. The only things that makes it watchable is the strong performances from Rooney Mara, Vanessa Redgrave and Theo James.
