Rich people partying and falling in love. Ugh. I can understand the criticism of the choice of music. It's a bold move. It didn't bother me as much as it did other people, but it didn't elevate the movie. That being said, using contemporary music in a period piece or a fantasy movie is a cardinal sin imo. Baz Luhrmann embraces excess without restraint: everything is loud, shiny, fast, and overwhelming. It can be tiring, but as the film moves forward, it slowly finds its own rhythm and begins to work on its own terms. This is not a classic adaptation of Fitzgerald, but a pop-infused reinterpretation where spectacle often threatens to swallow the drama. Still, there are moments when the film slows down and lets the characters breathe, and that’s where it gains emotional weight. Leonardo DiCaprio delivers a strong performance, portraying Gatsby as vulnerable and obsessive without overstatement, while Joel Edgerton provides a grounded counterbalance to the visual excess. The biggest issue is Luhrmann’s inability to stop pushing: constant visual flourishes, anachronistic music, and hyperactive editing dilute some of the dramatic impact. It's heavy use of CGI and 2010s electronic music leaves it feeling strangely dated to the 2010s, despite being set in the 1920s. Which there is no excuse for; electronic music and the 1920s aesthetic have been blended before, think "Puttin' on the Ritz" by Taco. Why would you do it the other way around, with only songs from the year your movie was made, to make it forever connected to a year that has absolutely nothing to do with the story? This film lacks heart and soul from production and direction, and is edited like a commercial. What brings up my rating is the efforts from Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio, who seem to be the only ones who care about the outcome of this film. Both are perfectly cast, and honestly deserved a better movie. This could have been greatly improved by a better composer, more traditional sets, and something to say. See more Read all reviews
