What to Know

Critics Consensus

Concocted with all the restraint of a mad scientist's experiment, THE BRIDE! lurches in so many different creative directions that the overall effect is both sloppy and inspired.

Audience Says

THE BRIDE! unapologetically walks down the bloody aisle with style and verve, sparking mixed reactions -- some question its unity, while many more wholeheartedly say “I do” without a prenup.

The Bride! is baggy, baffling, and erratically conceived, yet even as I bemoaned its inadequacies, I was also fascinated by them and by Gyllenhaal’s steadfast commitment to the concept, her choices clearly born of the desire to experiment. Go to Full Review

Gyllenhaal zips between tones and styles with a ferocious abandon. Even when her film is utterly befuddling, it’s a joy to behold. Go to Full Review

The film thrives on contradiction. It is gothic yet flamboyant, philosophical yet gleefully irreverent. Go to Full Review

The Bride! is an ambitious mess that's narratively disjointed, performantly outlandish, thematically uneven and tonally all over the place. So, naturally, I kinda dug it. Go to Full Review

The new gothic romance centering on and reimagining Frankenstein’s bride is visually stunning, fearlessly kinetic and inventive, and worth celebrating. Go to Full Review

Shay M 7h I was not real interested in seeing this one and didnt see much advertised about it, but we had an unplanned date night and picked it as it seemed there was not much else to pick from. I was absolutely shocked at how fantastic this movie was! It will definitely get some awards! Maggie directed and produced this creative story of how the bride of Frankenstein came to be. Sharing insights into how many women are treated as objects and are supposed to stand behind a man and not have thoughts, dreams, and a mind of her own. The main actress does an outstanding job and ends up leading an entire movement! Christian Bale did an amazing job as Frank. This is one that is disturbing, yet sticks in your mind for weeks on end. It reminded me of Joker, but even better with more depth into the characters, time period, and women. My husband loved it too! Absolute must even if youre not really into Frankenstein, women-power, or dark movies. Loved how it was told from the authors point of few and the cameo appearances by the supposed author were downright sinister. See more aimee 1d Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride! (2026) is a gothic reimagining set in 1930s Chicago, following a lonely Frankenstein’s monster (Christian Bale) who enlists Dr. Euphronius (Annette Bening) to create a companion. They reanimate a murdered woman (Jessie Buckley), who becomes a radicalized, independent force, sparking a chaotic romance and a violent cross-country police chase. Maggie Gyllenhaal brings us a fantastic monstrous fueled reimagining of The Bride of Frankenstein. The Bride!—”A ghost story, a horror story, or, most frighteningly, a love story,” as Shelley describes it—is the Frankenstein she wanted to write but didn’t get to. Its also a feminist Frankenstein freakout with some electric performances by the bonnie and clyde wild ride duo. love story, gangster movie, and overall a mash with monsters! It's a twisted romance about two damaged and reinvented beings colliding in search of wholeness.. It's indeed monstrous.. I could say more... But.... "I would prefer not to". See more Gabriel T W 2d One of the most understood movies of 2026. Complex, intentional, brash, audacious and it doesn't give a fuck about your preconceptions. See more Jules 2d A fun dangerous fantasy. Less creepy but a campy love story with dance numbers and a few standoffs. See more Roy De Los Rios 3d I really enjoyed this movie a lot. From my point of view, The Bride was a very entertaining film with great visuals and a strong atmosphere from beginning to end. The story kept my attention the whole time, and the character of Ida was especially interesting to watch develop. The acting was solid, and the overall style of the movie made it feel unique compared to other recent films. Definitely worth watching, and I would give it 5 stars without hesitation. See more Lyn 3d Jesse Buckley... Wow, just wow. She was sublime and ferocious in this cousin to the Frankenstein movies (and story). The movie is frenetic, sad, funny, gruesome, and smart. I loved the 30's time frame, and the whole visual feast this movie gave me. The dialog is smart the performances spot on, They managed to give a nod to Young Frankenstein, Bonnie and Clyde, Ida Lupino (one of the first female directors. This definitely was a feminist creedo, no doubt and the love story between Ida/Penelope/Mary/The Bride (Buckley) Frankie (Bale) is heartbreakingly beautiful.
