TheMovieSearch R @TheMovieSearch Jan 19 Sunrise is one of those films that leaves you uncertain even after the credits roll. It isn’t outright terrible, but it never fully comes together either. Throughout the runtime, it feels like the story is constantly circling something meaningful, only to miss the landing every time. The screenplay struggles with focus, bouncing between ideas without ever committing to a clear direction. The good versus evil dynamic feels underdeveloped, as if only half the story made it to the screen. There are moments where it seems like the film is about to find its footing, but that momentum quickly fades. The energy gets lost, and the narrative feels diluted rather than built upon. For a general audience, it may still be watchable, but from a critical standpoint, it feels unfinished and confused. Ultimately, Sunrise isn’t bad because of one major flaw, but because it never fully knows what it wants to be, leaving the experience hollow and disappointing. For some reason, is listed/marketed as a horror movie, which it no more is than Clint Eastwood's "High Plains Drifter," from which it borrows substantially. Direction is good and cinematography is fantastic, the forests of Northern Ireland subbing nicely for the Pacific Northwest. You also get lost in the flashbacks which are confusing See more Jeffrey P @vanillavoodoo1 08/25/2024 I was liking this from the very start, and it didn’t really let up all throughout, but then it started doing flashbacks. While flashbacks usually do muddle things, I’m not sure I’d like this as much if the story is told in a more linear manner without flashbacks. The fact that I am not the biggest fan of vampire movies is even a greater testament to this anomaly being as likeable as it is. Very well done. See more Read all reviews
