Critics Consensus

Though it hints at the absurdity to come in later installments, The Spy Who Loved Me's sleek style, menacing villains, and sly wit make it the best of the Roger Moore era.

Roger Moore put an unusual goofy spin on Bond, which didn’t always work in the overall vision. However, The Spy Who Loved Me is likely his best film that only shows glimpses of how truly outrageous his era can get. Go to Full Review

Ben W @Username618 1h Honestly, cannot remember. Sorry, I am trying, at a first instance, just to remember everything I've seen, wall to wall-e. See more Ed B. @EdLee Mar 3 The spy who loved me has lot of fun and action one would expect in James Bond film. Bond pairs up with beautiful KGB spy Triple X ( Barbara Bach). To stop villain Stromberg from nuking NYC & Moscow. In This movie , were introduced to Jaws (Richard Kiel) Who becomes a staple bad guy in Bond franchise. This is a decent James Bond movie. Not the best of them. But entertaining. See more Alec B @Alec97 Feb 9 If these movies were not going to return to the interesting dynamics of OHMSS (at least not for many years), then fun is the way to go. Teaming Bond up with a spy from the other side is an incredible idea and the Lotus Esprit is my favorite Bond gadget car. See more Yaaron R @KompetenterMedi Feb 3 Underwater spectacle, surface-level nonsense The Spy Who Loved Me has some fun ideas, especially the submarine car and the underwater setting, and the gadget side of Bond finally feels like it is improving. Unfortunately, the film still collapses under shallow writing. The villain is "evil because evil," killing allies just to look ruthless, which makes the whole scheme feel irrational. Bond’s romance scenes are not only dated, they are badly written and take up too much space, and he keeps getting caught, killing any sense of competence. The hand to hand action is faster than earlier entries but still unconvincing, with sped up footage that looks silly. Jaws comes off more cartoonish than threatening. A few cool water-based moments cannot save the rest. See more Alejandro E @Alex970 Jan 30 Of all the times Roger Moore played James Bond, this may well be the best. Why? Because it doesn't borrow from previous instalments or unrelated films. The action scenes are justified enough to enjoy with the essential popcorn. See more Read all reviews
