Young Han Solo finds adventure when he joins forces with a gang of galactic smugglers and a 190-year-old Wookiee named Chewbacca. What's onscreen simply isn't magical enough. It might please die-hard fans to know how Han got the last name or how he made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs...But I think even they might be disappointed.

Directed by Ron Howard, the action and vitality of the franchise starts to kick in about half way through. Once it does, the ride is thoroughly enjoyable.

The heart of the "Star Wars" films has always been about delivering an adventure that would inspire the imagination of the 12-year-old in me, something that paid homage to the old action and fantasy movies I loved. "Solo" delivers on that.

What are we looking for in a film like Solo: A Star Wars Story? The answer, I think, is simple: Films that value a good story most of all. Solo may be entirely unnecessary, but at least it does that.
