Snow Falling on Cedars Reviews

One big chill. The only thing that moves with any purpose in this picture is the weather.

Shot either in extreme, eye-swelling close-ups or in excessively composed, arty landscapes, I now know more about the blood vessels in these actors' noses than I care to.

Good movie for adults and older teens.

... it powerfully re-creates the history, captures the essence of Guterson's characters, and carries us through hypnotized by breathtaking cinematography.

...the movie is, for the most part, just unreasonably dull.

Badly hobbled by an over-emphasis upon cinematic technique that obliterates the emotional undertow of the story.

Hicks and cinematographer Robert Richardson give this interdicted love affair an emotional immediacy with the sheer brute force of their images.

The film seems to be the work of a visual pack rat, stitched together in a feat of manic, roving impressionism that is much too polite to acknowledge the presence of anger.

Pretty but chilly.

Crashes under the weight of its own ambitions.

Hicks' precariously impressionistic interpretation of David Guterson's novel is either artful or a snow job -- and possibly both.

The eccentric characters which inhabited the novel are no longer present. In their place is an elegantly shot void.

I found much of it as dispiriting as a museum tour conducted in soporific tones by an overexposed TV pundit.

Snow Falling is not a crowd-pleasing, or even audience-oriented, movie; it's a two-hour-plus mood piece.
