Gareth v @geewah 06/18/2023 An absorbing and powerful documentary that shines a much needed light on all the good the Sherpas of Nepal do for foreigners and the complete lack of respect many show towards them for what they do. See more 06/06/2021 I'm making a conscious effort to try and watch more female-directed films; I seem to have a penchant for mountain themed documentaries so this is next in line. This documentary focuses on shining a spotlight on the work of the sherpas of Nepal who have been underappreciated for the services they provide to those wishing to climb Mount Everest. Essentially this film highlights another example of indigenous people being exploited for profit by the western world. Lots of these people rely on this mountain climbing tourist business to make their living, but are only paid a tiny fraction of what these companies make in return for regularly risking their lives. This is epitomised by the expedition leader who is completely dismissive of the sherpas anxieties and reservations of climbing after an accident that killed 16 of their fellow workers. Indeed, directly after the accident, he seems more immediately concerned about how this will affect his business and income rather than the fact people have just been killed. People who value money over human life really are awful. On a technical level, the film is lovely with some beautifully captivating photography and lushious musical score. See more 03/25/2021 Beautiful film that discusses the commercialisation of Mt Everest and the impact it has on surrounding communities, who rely on western tourism to survive. Highly recommend this doco and be prepared to feel emotions. It's a tale of two sides: 1) entitled folk who believe they have the right to conquer Everest because they paid a large sum of money and spent some time preparing for expeditions, and 2) small communities who are essentially forced to support the industry in order to survive. It disproves the common belief that mass tourism is a sustainable and ethical way to help communities - "I'm paying them so they should be happy", "They wouldn't have made any money if it wasn't for me". I hope this film changes the mind of anyone who thinks this way. P.S. I am convinced all mountaineers are psychopaths. See more Read all reviews
