Blu B Oct 6 It's a good idea and touches on subject matters that films like Sicario & Lethal Weapon have done but nowhere near the same level of success and yet another dissappointment for Stone post 80-90's heyday. I honestly can't even tell it's him half the time. The trademark direction is all but gone at this point. The acting isn't good which is a true shame given the high quality cast here. Everyone is trying and giving effort but it's the clunky dialouge that really weighs this down. Right out of the gates the dialouge is bad but it does get more stable but still clunky. The music is boring generic and forgettable and everything else isn't good. The action is so basic in this. The character development of the main trio feels very rushed in the first few minutes. Lively's narration doesn't add anything at all to this. Than it gets extremely jumpy, convuluted, and boring. When she gets captured and the boys trying to get a plot together to bust her out it keeps jumping terribly between the two. It feels like two seperate films and it feels like stuff just happens. Than there is other scenes like the Del Toro sideplot that makes it so hard to follow and bloated with the runtime. Del Toro is alright and probably the best thing in this for what it's worth. Any commentary this may have about drugs is completely lost also. This could work. But the dialouge, unneeded sideplots, rushed character setup, and more than anything the unfocused two main stories are what kill this. It is a pretty setting half the time though and the backgrounds look good. But the scenes themselves are boring and don't really stand out. Skip this. John Travolta plays an interesting character part. Benecio del Toro portrays such a twisted violent character. Honestly, I don't know how he can wind down after a day on the set playing that role. In general the film is way too graphically violent for my taste. Some of the premise of the story is pretty thin. 3 big stars named above captivated my interest enough to see it all the way through.
