Self congratulatory and auto-flagellation of the worst kind. Overpaid and fawned upon actors who did decent things with the first, get even more overpaid and more excused to sleep walk thru the second. The directing is so lazy as to be Grade-school level. The plot as thin as wet tissue, and about as much amenity. The scene where Julia Robert’s character plays Julia Robert’s is the kind of indulgent crap best left in the 90’s where it kinda-almost belonged. Worth viewing only as a ‘what were they thinking’ moment. The whole film has aged horribly (it was awkward at the time, but now is just embarrassing). Avoid. See more Matthew D @OceanSage Jan 8 Steven Soderbergh’s crime thriller Ocean’s Twelve (2004) is a pale comparison to Ocean’s Eleven (2001). However, Ocean’s Twelve is still very funny and enjoyable. Soderbergh’s direction remains sleek and focused. The cinematography makes great use of Rome and Amsterdam as settings with gorgeous art in the background and lavish sets everywhere. The cozy hotel room is actually my favorite set during the Amsterdam parts. Thankfully, Brad Pitt is still charming as the fixer and heist planner Rusty. Pitt’s chemistry with the effortlessly funny George Clooney as criminal mastermind Danny Ocean is excellent. They keep you laughing and smiling throughout the gnawing run-time of Ocean’s Twelve. I love the lively music throughout Ocean’s Twelve, which is a wide blend of genres. The energetic "The a la Menthe" song by La Caution is a burst of adrenaline during Vince Cassel’s laser dance sequence. Soderbergh is a fantastic director to keep you interested in a shadowy sequel his Ocean’s film. I feel the reason this movie tanked review wise compared to the first film, is because it was overly compared to the first film. Now of course it’s completely justified to compare the two. After all they share a name, so the sequel should earn that name. In fact that’s the only reason I marked Oceans 12 down half a star (the other half star was for that honestly not well executed Julia Garner bit). As a movie by itself without the prior attachment to Oceans 11 I feel it turned out quite nice, especially bolstered by the great talent its cast holds.
