The movie takes you on a journey through nighttime LA and addresses controversial topics of ethics, women in the workplace and the line between completing one's job description and overstepping into moral wrongfulness. It is much to think about and certainly relevant to current times. The storyline may perhaps have benefitted from further information on the background of the lead and a little more depth into Rick's character to make the ending even more poignant. That's not its terrain; instead, the film effortlessly transports the viewer into an uncanny, warped and historically impossible reflection of our world, one which enhances its most grotesque, and gives birth to edge characters. Among those, Lou, the protagonist played by Jake Gyllenhaal, shines like no other, as the perfect LinkedIn profile turned a wretched dreg of society, captivating for its crude radicality. The viewer should not come to Nightcrawler looking for a moralist tale; on the contrary, this movie is unapologetic in making the audience participant of the thrill and excitement of the protagonist. Nightcrawler works on so many levels. The writing and direction is fantastic, which is especially impressive as it's the directorial debut by Dan Gilroy who takes on both duties. He had a clear vision of how he wanted to portray LA and the sleek, brooding yet slightly lackadaisical tone transfers perfectly onto the big screen. The acting is phenomenal - Gyllenhaal gives a performance that's the polar opposite from his character in Prisoners and he was on point for every second. He was the perfect casting choice to carry the movie. The movie has a clear message on the media and how they abuse stories and reap the benefits regardless of who gets victimized. It's a message that has been told a million times before, but never quite like this. Whether that stem from the lack of knowledge about our protagonist or flat fallen side characters that you grow to love despite that.
