It has beautiful animation (especially for 1984!), and a simple enough story to be entertaining, but not too complex or hard to follow. This feels like a simple enough movie that it could easily get newcomers hooked on Studio Ghibli. It’s something simple and entertaining that appeals to both diehard Studio Ghibli fans, and casual audiences who just want an awesome animated movie. If you’re a Studio Ghibli fan or are interested in giving the studio a try, this is a great movie for you. See more Walden C @lazerlemur Jan 18 "Nausicaä Of The Valley Of The Wind" is amateurish when compared to the beautiful, polished epics that Ghibli has become known for, and yet it still shines in its incredible worldbuilding and bizarre charm, a true testament to the passion and creativity of the Studio Ghibli team. The execution here is rather clumsy. The transitions are awkward, one sound effect will cut off another, and the animation, especially in flying scenes, is uncomfortably clunky, with movements that feel almost robotic and utterly out of place in the massive, grand scene composition. The exposition is also notably heavy-handed. Many conversations exist for the sole reason of telling, rather than showing, the events of the story, and sound completely unnatural. However, this film succeeds against all odds at immersing viewers in its beautifully twisted world, and despite its dark tone, it is a piece of cinematic comfort food that I will undoubtedly be returning to again and again. See more Robert R @RobertRiley Jan 8 Though technically a pre-Ghibli work, "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind" feels very much like a typical effort from the studio in question, albeit slightly lesser (for me, at least). The thematic underpinnings are there, but a little bit more heavy-handed than I'm used to when it comes to Miyazaki's stories. The visuals are — as always — terrific to look at, but I think the post-apocalyptic setting strips away an opportunity for true vibrance. It's also decidedly more violent than I was expecting. I know I'm nowhere near caught up in my Ghibli filmography viewing attempts, but I don't think I'm coloring outside the lines when I say that this might be the bloodiest thing Miyazaki's done to my knowledge. With that, though, there's still plenty of enjoyment to be had. The characters are likeable and well developed. The creativity is undeniable. I just think this was a very clear starting point for Miyazaki rather than the pinnacle of anything we know he's capable of. See more Kevin P @RT55971421 Jan 5 An incredibly inspired and ambitious post-apocalyptic world that's told on such an epic grand scale. The mushroom jungle is surreal, beautiful, and unsettling all at the same time. The action scenes are energetic and riveting with tension. I love the poignant themes about nuclear annihilation and environmentalism. Nausicaa is an awesome female action star protagonist. The voice cast is great, especially Alison Lohman and Patrick Stewart. The Pikachu pet is useless, but cute. The bug monsters are creepy, but not evil. The warlord villains are pretty cool. There's a good twist about the underground petrified forest. I love the ethereal and creepy music leitmotif Requiem Lalalala. Admittedly, the pacing can be a little slow early on and some of the environmental dialogue can sometimes be a bit on-the-nose. I also wish we saw more character bonding moments. But it's still a very engaging plot with a very exciting and surreal climax that ties everything together perfectly. With beautiful animation and fascinating lore it is impossible to say I can't recommend! I find it interesting that fox squirrels appear in both this and Castle In The Sky, that could mean they take place in the same world because I've seen all of Hayao Miyazaki's movies and I haven't seen the fox squirrels in anything else. The only thing I could ask for from this movie is more info on the 7 days of fire. If your reading this go and watch Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind along with Castle In The Sky.
