The Long Riders Reviews

Sep 24, 2024

Great, short, and fast-paced western flick. Tells the interesting story without bloating it up.

Very good fairly accurate telling on the James Younger Gang. Good story and acting plus stylized action

Walter Hills fantastic Western is on a par with Sam Peckinpah and the casting is perfect. The film was probably missed in the rush to pound Heaven's gate . And United Artists were pretty much dead in the water meaning other films like this Cutters Way and The Dogs of War escaped rather than being released Apart from that the film delivers and the final raid on the bank is up there with anything Peckinpah shot

Good western with a lot of foul language in it so be careful, James Welch, Henderson, Arkansas, July 1, 2023

If you're looking for a masterfully directed western that's perfectly balanced between environmental authenticity and elegiac characters' strenght and charisma, this is the movie for you. Rounded in family bonds' fundamental purposes and inescapable backlashes, vendetta's harsh violence and the depiction of a soon to collapse self-regulated and self-segregated provincial world on the outskirts of the modern american society ambition that the Civil War aftermath was going to digest and offer to a yet fragmented country, Walter Hill forges an intense and peculiar movie that loves to the bone the western aestethics but also places itself in an unusual midwestern setting. Everything in this plot progresses utterly epic still remaining realistic, somewhat stiff and composed, as passages of a ritual, to elevate gestures and significant moments, stages of a timetable that from the legendary deeds and renegade conduct of the James-Younger gang end in the downward spiral of these hopeless men that just won't fit at all with the expectations of their country to be. The family element is crucial to underline dramatically the emotions that are in the game but also to gain that kind of credibility to make the numerous cast gel (built upon groups of real brothers actors). The search of an authentic environment is the key to the entire operation, affecting everything from the locations, the historically accurate soundtrack by Ry Cooder, till the toned down, even darkened, film foil.

Far too simplistic to work.

One of the best westerns ever filmed

Gritty 70s take on the ensemble Western features top tier casting, a flawless score, & incredible stunts from both man AND horse. Hill knows when to speed up & when to slow down, but the structure still feels a little off. #nitrosMovieChallenge

The Long Riders: 1980. It was a cool western and to see all the "brothers", interesting concept. I gave it 4 because I gave 'Tombstone' 5. Wasn't as good but I did enjoy it a lot. A young Dennis Quaid turned out to be the best actor in the long run. You can see it here in this film. The Keach's did a great job!!! Adding Jeff Bridges and Beau Bridges probably would have been even better, oh well.

A decent take on Jessie James and his gang. A slow paced movie that would have been better as a documentary and I felt other characters were more intriguing and entertaining than the main character.

Boring movie celebrating a bunch of confederate criminals. David Carradine is the only one of the cast not acting like a wooden stump.

Watched this again after 40 years when I saw it in the theater when I was in high school. Historically to my knowledge it is accurate and I thought it was great how the used real brothers as the Keach's played James, the Carradines the Qauid's the Millers and the Guest's as the profiteers Ford brothers.

This is one of the best westerns to come along in a VERY long time. The casting, the actors, the directors and the filming locations, ESPECIALLY in the small Georgia town, ALL FANTASTIC!! I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND you see this movie!!

David Carradine, Keith Carradine, Robert Carradine, James Keach, Stacy Keach, Dennis Quaid, and Randy Quaid an impressive assortment of sibling actors in this 1860's western about the Youngers, the Millers and Jesse James all working as a unit to rob banks at the end of the Civil War most of them still want honest ordinary lives and they see taking the money from several towns as their own form of revenge for the struggle the country went through really terrific gun fights that are exciting and intense as well as these actors having some of the best chemistry I've seen

Above-average western with great period detailing and solid performances from the four sets of real-life brothers.

A Walter Hill Classic, manly men and their women. In that order, he gets the details ight, like during a rapid fire sequence the need to cock a single-action pistol for every shot. My only problem, arms wise, is the use of revolvers against targets 50' and more away. The odds of hitting such a target with a period handgun are nearly zero.

This is the greatest remake ever made. Loved the Sklar brothers as the Fords.

In my opinion, this is one of the best westerns ever made. The shoot out at the end is epic. A must see movie.

An interesting Western in that it is one of the early examples of Hollywood getting gritty and more realistic with their stories after the Spaghetti Western boom. Subsequently, it's failure was one of the final nails in the coffin for the genre. It's not my favorite Hill film, but it's a good Western. The gimmick of all these actual brothers in the cast was cool, and actually works to its favor. There's some great performances.
