Here Before Reviews
Don't waste a single minute on this film. Sounds good. Actually pants. Very slow, not scary, no dialogue; questions asked & not answered, half statements attempted then dropped - you are left hanging/guessing. Plot ok, but very poorly done. No proper resolution at the end - ambiguous endings are always the worst! Wish we'd read these reviews before we viewed.
New neighbours bring a young girl with whom Risboroughs character becomes fixated, having recently lost her own child. Slow with a late twist. Risborough's Northern Irish accent is impressive but the accents may prove challenging and you may need sub titles!
Could've been a lot better, wasted potential with what could have been an amazing story of reincarnation. Still has entraining aspects to it.
Whoever rated this more than a 3 star HAD to have gotten paid. This movie is slow, confusing, and doesn’t have a good plot until literally 10 minutes before the movie ends. And even then it’s still not clear. Terrible movie. I felt like my time was wasted
Even though it’s slow, it’s so eerie and mysterious that it kept me completely engaged til the end. Very unpredictable ending.
Started out slow but had a good turnaround! Definitely worth a watch!
Ending a bit predictable but not quite on the mark. There was a twist, however no explanation for how Megam knew so much about their deceased daughter. That was left hanging and confusing. The endi g could have been done better.
I was so very excited to watch this movie based upon its plot synopsis and the favorable critical reaction on Rotten Tomatoes. But, for the life of me, I just could not get into the groove of this one. I love a good, slow-paced movie, but this is borderline lethargic, and the first three-quarters quite frankly bordered on tedium for me. And the twist explanation at the end, while certainly containing a bit of dramatic weight, doesn't really hold up well when scrutinized. I'd love to get more specific, but I'm not a spoiler. The one thing that held my interest throughout was the performance of Riseborough, a critically acclaimed actress about whom I've heard wonderful things but have not had the opportunity to see much of her work. She is splendid here and finds depths of vulnerability and empathy in a character that could very easily have become obnoxiously compulsive. I wish I had responded as well to the movie overall as I did to her performance.
Here Before has a twist I wasn't expecting. For most of it, the focus is the seemingly grief fuelled mental health of the main character, who comes to believe that the young daughter of her new neighbours is the reincarnation of her daughter. She's not. But there is a link. Strange to see many locations in and around Belfast that I know well.
Absolutely terrible movie! Overwhelming slow, no climax, no thrills, and the twist ending makes absolutely no sense!
I really enjoyed this film by director/writer Stacy Gregg, making her first full-length movie. And it's an assured, taut, and uniformly impressive first outing by Gregg. The cast, led by the wonderful Andrea Riseborough, is solid in general. Young actress Niamh Dornan is terrific as a girl trying to be both a daughter to her mam and to the lovely woman who lives next door who has lost her own wee girl. Riseborough is simply marvelous in the lead role of Laura, a wife and mother who has lost a daughter to a tragic accident but seems, when he first see her and her family, to be dealing well in her time since the death. Then her world is flipped about and her psyche torn again by the pains of her loss and the unimaginable thought of the new neighbor's having her own lost child in some reincarnated form. As would follow such a story line, some chaos and confusion builds between the families, as Laura becomes too attached to and consumed by Dornan's Megan (or is it Josie?), and Laura's son Tadgh builds up anger and envy with Megan's presence and her apparent recollections of Josie's childhood. Then there's the big reveal, and you find out why Megan's mother tells 'Brendy' it was a mistake. I found the ending to be one I was quite happy with as there is resolution that seems authentic, believable and even needed. Nicely done by editors Newman and Davis, camera work by Chloë Thomson, and great set designs (esp. the kids' rooms), by McGuinness. So glad this didn't get twisted into some horror flick ala Audrey Rose, which isn't bad, but it would've been a disservice to "Her Before". 3.3 stars
Well made, great acting, a little slow. I almost stopped watching because the Irish dialect was so hard to understand that I didn't know what was going on most of the time. We're they even speaking English? If you dare to watch, turn on the subtitles. This was painful to experience otherwise.
This short but fascinating movie succeeds in creating a fantastically unsettling atmosphere to compliment the natural eerie beauty of its Northern Ireland setting. It's a slow and brooding one that I think is worthwhile in the end, but it does wear out its welcome a bit through the middle even with how short it is. That said - it's brilliantly shot, well acted, and has a great air of mystery to it all.
Psychological Thriller ‘Here Before' Dissolves Reality with Simplistic Mystery
A heartwarming story of love and twists. Good acting and soothing visuals.
Andrea Riseborough is incredible. Such a confident first film. Takes a borderline premise (woman thinks neighbor's kid is reincarnation of her lost daughter) to great places and a wonderful third act. This movie is great; why are RT audience scores only for Marvel fans. Ugh.
Constantly surprising and typically phenomenal work by Andrea Riseborough. Lean, well written, and beautifully and artfully shot. Thoroughly, compulsively watchable.
While having a interesting take involving grief and mental breakdown, Here Before loses itself mid-plot to a whole lot of confusion for the viewer to catch up to the strong climax that comes a little too late to save the rest of the film.
When the twist hits, it's excellent.
