In Godzilla it takes a morally questionable super weapon and a sacrificial scientist and in this one it’s like “lol avalanche” - still, it was charming and campy and I quite enjoyed it. See more Khaliel P Aug 17 Just weeks after the success of Godzilla in 1954, producer Tomoyuki Tanaka rushed a sequel, written, filmed, and edited in less than a year on a reduced budget. This follow-up loses the impact of the original and completely abandons the nuclear theme, focusing solely on monster battles. Pilots Shoichi Tsukioka (Hiroshi Koizumi) and Koji Kobayashi (Minoru Chiaki) discover Godzilla and Anguirus on a deserted island, while Osaka hopes the two monsters will kill each other. Motoyoshi Oda replaces Ishiro Honda as director and explains Godzilla’s return simply by introducing other dinosaurs. For international release, Godzilla was renamed Gigantis, though the name was soon dropped. In this film, Godzilla remains ambiguous: he saves humans by defeating Anguirus but is still a threat. Dr. Yamane (Takashi Shimura) returns to identify the monster, while the social tension and nuclear fear of the first film are completely absent. The film relies heavily on miniatures, which now appear visibly amateur. Godzilla’s suit is more flexible, but the monster is filmed at 18 frames per second instead of in slow motion, giving an odd sense of speed and making the battles confusing, almost like a wrestling match. The monsters destroy even more buildings than in the first film, but only for spectacle, adding to the sequel’s “cheap” feel. Godzilla Raids Again is a fun film but a disappointing sequel. Anguirus is a welcome addition but not very original. The movie had a mixed reception in Japan and abroad, and it would be seven years before Godzilla returned to the big screen. Godzilla Raids Again lacks the emotional depth and dark thematic elements that made Godzilla so powerful. The film isn't all negatives though. It's the first to entroduce the monster on monster brawl it out fights the series is known so well for, and it's a pretty cool fight at that.
