Ghosts of Cité Soleil Reviews
Execellent account of life in the slums of Haiti during political turmoil. Features a scores with and appearances by Wyclef Jean.
Un bon docu sur Haiti en 2004.. qui laisse penser qu Haiti est foutu. Avec des chefs pareils, c est pas demain que le pays sortira de la misere.
As usually the poor people are used by political forces to achieve their goals. Ghosts pretend to be big bosses with a big guns in their hands but the only thing they can be sure is that they day young in they poverty slums.
One of the most brutal and facinating documentaries I have seen. It presents a rare and blunt look at two brothers, each with a gang to lead, in the the poorest slum of Port Au Prince, Haiti, Cite Soleil. It shows their trials and tribulations they face among their people, government, and each other, which all boils down to everyday life to them.
You will not be able to go there alone, you will not find such pictures in the catalogues of the tourist office - a fascinating insight into poverty, violence and politics.
A good and rather disturbing documentary. However Leth failed to really explain the whole story behind the politics. If you don't already have some knowledge about the whole situation, I think you may find it a bit confusing. But, it's still good, non the less.
Its funny how you can have all the power & somebody can come in out of nowhere & just take it from you
Haiti has always been my favorite island. It's a beautiful island with beautiful people who are lost in a storm of political explotation and extreme poverty that's exacerbated by the general lack interest from the global community. This documentary gives you a brutal look into this island. It's great in that sort of 'God, I'm depressed for these people' sort of way.
Uan historia que merecÃa un documental bien estructurado y montado y no esa estética de videoclip que es lo que nos queda al final.
I'm not comfortable rating documentaries. Things I found interesting in this one include the positioning of the regime/city/country/ghetto and multiple international influences, such as Wyclef and, of course, US foreign policy. I worry that the director went a bit too far in establishing the romantic story arc. But then, presumably Asger Leth is related to Jorgen Leth and he's been doing questionable but interesting things with the documentary genre boundaries for decades. As a film, it wasn't impressive, as a subject it was fascinating.
Horrifying story about life in the slums of Haiti. Once again I want to say how glad I am to live in a small rural town; I'm safe and get to live without fear.
The inside footage of the slum of Cite' Soleil is incredible, but the movie was sadly lacking a good deal of depth to the nature of the crisis in Haiti. As an examination of gang members it is a good film, but as an analysis of the background or potential remedies for Haiti's turmoil this film leaves much to be desired.
This documentary actually tells a story, and covers a turbulent period of extreme political and social instability in Haiti. It is one of the most bold and brave pieces of shooting I have ever seen, with some really dangerous scenes captured on tape. It is just a marvelous tragic tale, with great editing, music and main characters that you come to like. And leaves a lasting impression too. So I was really impresed and a bit surprised by the quality and the storytelling. I agree with Werner Herzog, this is one of the most influential and one of the best documentaries in the last decade.
Excellent movies. I am amazed at how well the camera men were in the heart of Cite Soleil and the amazing shots they took. The story was well balanced and gave a great overview of the political issues at that time. Great show.
