Teddy B Jan 27 It does, at times, feel like a B-grade 'Rebecca' in its pseudo-Gothic atmosphere and what appears to be the build-up of the mental deterioration of the female character before another plot is revealed, but George Cukor's tight direction and personality over 'Gaslight' makes it a solid success. Ingrid Bergman's character is written to be a great deal too stupid and wishy-washy even for her time, which is my main problem, but she manages to make it work within a story that you can tell definitely began on the stage. See more Shari M Feb 23 While I despise being scared and detest horror movies, this film had me riveted to the end. Bergman's acting is seamless and genuine, subtle and deep, and everything around her fascinating. The story is well-concocted - (much improved from the 1940 version four years earlier, though that version has a few interesting quirks - MGM's 1944 version here is vastly superior) and the through line knits all things together to a satisfying and interesting ending.
