A further investigation of them shows a kind of conspiracy with a surprising conclusion. "The Forgotten" is a great sci-fi thriller, which recalls X-Files, but the theatrical conclusion is not good. I was very disappointed with the last fifteen minutes, but the alternate ending in the DVD is better and better. I have just rewatched this film with the alternate ending and I really loved it. I am suspicious to write about the wonderful Julianne Moore, since I am a great fan of her, but she has another excellent performance. It is amazing how beautiful and talented this actress is. The cinematography is excellent, the effects are sometimes very scary, and I really enjoyed this movie. It could be better with some improvements in the screenplay, since there are flaws, but anyway it is highly recommended to fans of X-Files. My vote is eight. I really love the concept of this movie. And they did it so well. It unfortunately couldn't capitalize on the concept because they didn't really know where to go with it and the end gets wonky. With a better resolution, it could've been amazing. Its still not horrible by any streatch. But the ending is a real swing & a miss.

Julianna Moore plays a mother who has lost her young son in a plane crash. The problem is, her husband, her shrink, and her friends all say she never had a son. So she must be delusional, right? No big spoiler here: She's not delusional. There is a conspiracy happening, but it's so badly presented that it frustrates the viewer. This is a film in which we demand an explanation and we don't get one. It starts out as a psychological drama, but it morphs into science fiction / fantasy. That may not be a bad thing, but the problem is, none of the supernatural stuff is explained. It just happens. I found it quite annoying. Films like this traditionally have a moment of exposition where we understand what's been going on. Maybe the screenwriter decided to just leave us guessing. Problem is, he isn't skillful enough to pull it off. It's well filmed, and it has some shocking moments, but it just doesn't coalesce into anything sensible.

For die-hard Julianne Moore fans like me, "The Forgotten" is a goldmine that turns out to be half pyrite. For my money, Moore is a top-tier actress and, even in this sometimes goofball psychodrama/sci-fi/horror/thriller, most of the time, she makes me believe in this miraculous script -- miraculous because, even with all the production's polish, I'm gobsmacked that the professionals thought such a sophomoric hodgepodge would hold water. How, indeed, could our Julianne have had such a lapse in judgment? Fifty bucks says, despite Gerald di Prego's name affixed to the writing, it went astray amid a battery of studio buttinskies. The premise is fresh: the mother-child bond is ironclad, but is it strong enough to withstand even supernatural (or alien) forces bent on breaking it? Alas, the forces employed to shock us -- and they do -- are so sudden, so unexplained that they leave us laughing up our sleeves. Worst of all these punctuations of freakiness -- quite original, by the way, and the CGI is kind of astonishing -- never even generates more than an "Oh shucks" from Moore or the other actors. Try to imagine "The Exorcist" with the priest non-plus by the Satanic jets of barf. Acting, as they say, is reacting. But when Moore doesn't, we don't.

It will be Forgotten as soon as it's over unless you remember its stupid twist.
