Hoping to reach the moon by the end of the decade, NASA plans a series of extremely dangerous, unprecedented missions in the early 1960s. In those sequences when Armstrong is heading for the stars, the approach is so immersive on a sensory level -- cacophonous sound design, juddering cinematography verging on the abstract -- that it almost compensates for the void at the film's core.

The cinematography in the film is fantastic and for his first film not about music, Chazelle gets the best score of any of his films from composer Justin Hurwitz, one that might just be my favorite score of the year so far

It wasn’t a bad movie,it just felt bland throughout the film. When it got good, it got really good, but those intense moments never lasted. It was too dark and grim for my liking. I did respect the directing of the film, it get very real and raw which I appreciated.

I have watched this movie once. No desire to see it again. However, upon watching a clip on YouTube I was reminded just how depressing this movie really was. Forget about the flag planting. It would not have improved upon the sadness I felt when I saw this. The moon landing was a crowing achievement for America. It's too bad that this movie does not reflect upon that. I don't think Neil Armstrong or Buzz Aldrin were brutally depressed when they landed and walked on the moon. Yet, this movie would have you believe that. This is one of the biggest problems with it, in my opinion.

Clearly, the over-exploited theme of the first man on the Moon recreated again has to bring a new perspective and the documentary is not its main focus. The first question I asked myself was why Ryan Gosling? It makes me think Neil Armstrong's personality was the director's contribution to the topic. But is it possible that Neil Armstrong had that prince-like blue-eyed, carefree look of Barbie’s partner? Could he be that pathetic, unemotional, self-centered quasi astronaut who can only screen-capture with his eyes the Moon, Earth, and his own footprints in the moon sand, and recite a line he had written in advance?

This movie taught me Neil Armstrong was part of the Gemini Program during the First Space Docking, I did enjoy that scene of the Gemini 8 Disaster

An immersive perspective as it shows all the trials to achieve this goal. All the fear & unknown anticipation is felt as you are placed in the rocket along side Armstrong. The score, sound editing, & cinematography shows everything in its isolated reality. Gosling’s subdued performance speaks volumes through his quiet journey through stress & grief in emotional ways. Yet it’s a one trick pony with a single tone that can be a bit stagnant & slow.

Boring plot. Or maybe Armstrong was that much of a typical male of his time who was unable to express emotions. Other than being the 1st to step foot on the moon, who cares about his boring personal life?
