It's a fascinating and underrated movie about love and lust on the both the subconscious level and how that varies amongst different classes. How we've commodified the human body and desire into transactional commodities that pressure women to become objects of affection and men to desire and consume. Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman are great, with a lot of subtleties hinting at their emotional and sexual disconnect. The secret masked orgy sex cult is the film's most memorable scene, but the rest of the film excellently builds up this bizarre sex nightmare with a deep and visually rich slow burn character work and a slow mystery that unravels. The question of love on a subconscious level vs a superficial conscious level is fascinating. Which is very fitting with how dream-like the film feels.
