South Boston cop Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) goes undercover to infiltrate the organization of gangland chief Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). As Billy gains the mobster's trust, a career criminal named Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) infiltrates the police department and reports on its activities to his syndicate bosses. The Departed would be fascinating enough if it were just about a cop going undercover to infiltrate the mob, but then when you add in the mirrored plotline of a mob boss planting one of his guys in the police department, it elevates the whole film to the next level. There are so many suspenseful moments in this movie, brought about by clever writing, expert direction, and excellent performances from the slew of big-name actors. It also knows how to pull the rug out from underneath the viewer, multiple times, which is a little unsettling, but the collateral damage of The Departed sticks with you.

This ensemble is the tip of the iceberg. Other than the King of ensembles the Godfather part 2 this is the cream of the crop. Find a better movie in any generation.
