Well, some idea, because I can't imagine 1970 was a good moment in time to be handing anybody a story that was both romantic, comic, and about divided loyalties in wartime, given that, at least on the American front, we were dealing with a war that was neither romantic nor comic, and nobody was supposed to have divided loyalties about anything. But I digress. I think this movie is wonderful. The cast gives it their best, Julie Andrews has a chance to actually act the part of a human being with her own ideas about where she goes and what she does, and the costuming and staging is magnificent. There are a few things that date it specifically to the late '60s/'70s, in terms of presentation and blocking, but the music is so good. I don't care. Possibly, since I was born in '61, it's all too native to me to worry about? Anyhow, watch it. It's great. It’s so magical seeing Julie Andrews twirling around on stage with those other worldly lights. And really listen to the lyrics they’re so meaningful. Aside from whistling away the dark the other songs are great too. I think it’s a very beautiful movie. People don’t like the war aspect but that’s not what this movies about. I couldn’t understand why Julie Andrews would be in something so bad and wondered why I had never heard of it until I read it was directed by her husband Blake Edwards and was a (well deserved) huge flop. The plot was totally unbelievable and the thought that someone who had been spied on to aid the enemy would want to kiss and make up with the person who betrayed him in the time of war is preposterous. Add to that many way too long and wooden love scenes with Rock Hudson plus ridiculous slapstick comedy sporadically injected just made it unbearable to watch. See more 03/12/2021 Despite some negative reviews out there, this movie was made in 1970. Rock Hudson was in his prime and Although we only see a little of Gloria Paul, WOW the striptease scene she performs is the hottest and most classic I have ever seen. Julie Andrews also does one. I thought this movie was very colorful and fun. Some fun scenes with world war 1 planes, a love story mixed in , I thought this is a very nice movie to be honest.
