Luis I @RT88024358 Sep 4 A representative work of surrealism, this film is highly psychological (if not outright psychoanalytical) exploring repressed sexuality and dissatisfaction within marriage through dream sequences and a chain of curious events experienced by the protagonist. While the visuals are not as explicit as the themes might suggest, the underlying ideas can still feel provocative, particularly considering the time of its release. Given its short runtime, the film occasionally struggles with pacing and structure; new characters and conflicts emerge in ways that feel slightly detached from the overarching narrative. However, this can be justified by the surreal or dream-logic framework that shapes the story. Ultimately, it’s a highly stylized, well-directed, and well-acted film that stands out within Buñuel’s body of work. Its brevity makes it easy to recommend, especially for fans of surrealism or of Buñuel himself. The crisp detail in the colors and framing in this film proves the directorial magnificence! Trying to find reason or justification in this film would make you fail to see the beauty in what making a story through film is. Despite the year this film was made, the film is beyond its time. Poor character development: we learn nothing at all about her relationship with Pierre or who she is as a person or what she really wants. Unclear/underdeveloped, and therefore, unbelievable, character motivation makes Belle de Jour unsympathetic. Ultimately, I was not made to care about any of these characters, and therefore, I don't care, and have no interest in this story. Bad storytelling all around. There is nothing special about the way that it looks visually, either. The idea that this is a masterpiece is absurd.
