Dr. C @drcereal Mar 8 A good analysis on class society that somewhat elopes from its ideological potential at the end, when, although ant militarism is defeated by the heroism of the working ant, the conditions for the working ants are not changed, perpetuating the ants' historical cycle of individualism and alienation. However, the historical context of this film shouldn't be ignored. This film is currently seen by different watchers as apparently "boring," but I would argue that this was because the film happened to be released on roughly the same date as "Disney's" (for material accuracy purposes, monopolies don't "make" original animation films, they commission them) "A Bug's Life." Disney's decision to release that movie on the same date is a move of strategic sabotage to suppress competition in the developing animation industry, forcing Antz, a movie of its own, unique animation style, to be unfairly compared to a film that utilizes differing animation methods, both shown to the same audience. And I like it. This is one of those early computer animated films, so the animation doesn't look very good...but for its time, it did, and some things, like the crowd simulation and the textures hold up. Antz isn't afraid to get dark. You find termite wars, with actual deaths shown by the dozen. You have a soldier ant, Barbatus, still alive and speaking with his head cut off. There is a scene where a wasp is squished by a flyswatter. Some may not like this at all. But this gives the film more of its distinct charm, I think. We have that adult humor (my favorite part is where two bugs find out what they're eating), political allegories, romance, and Allen-esque wit. He nailed it here. Also the other cast members are great, though. All in all, a great film, establishing Dreamworks as the second major animation studio, and better than its competitor A bug's life for sure.
