While the path to document this tale was no doubt fraught with peril, one wishes that Le Guillou would further remove himself from the proceedings, as An Unknown Compelling Force spends ample time focused on the director.

Liam Le Guillou’s An Unknown Compelling Force starts with the promise of shedding new light on the Dyatlov Pass incident, but that promise evaporates pretty quickly. The film leans so heavily on repeating the same fragments of information, as well as the same images, that after a while you begin to wonder whether the repetition is simply padding for runtime. Instead of building momentum, the documentary circles the same points again and again until the entire experience feels oddly hollow. The conclusion lands with a thud, making the journey feel less like an investigation and more like a loop you’ve been stuck in.

Film maker Liam Le Guillou does a good job combining different elements of this tragic incident to make the documentary interesting and worth watching. The historical background, the setting, the cinematography and the current analysis by forensic experts all move the film along nicely.
