Always Reviews

Great cast and setting. Dreyfuss is so deeply unlikable that it underminds the movie a bit. Brad Johnson doesn't work. Holly Hunter is amazing. A mixed bag in a forgotten Spielberg movie. It is pretty good, but not great.

Always has always had a special place in my heart. It made a big impact on me the first time that I saw it, and those emotions have stuck with me since then. Even though this Steven Spielberg film is dripping with sentimentality, I think it works because every single character is authentic and likeable. Richard Dreyfuss, Holly Hunter, and John Goodman carry this story with relative ease, and I think everyone would love to be greeted by the calming presence of Audrey Hepburn when they reach the other side. I have actually been surprised to learn that Always is not as beloved by all as it is by me.

A chic flick for men

It's one of those movies that something reminds you to go look for it to watch again after many years.

"Always," a film from 1989 featuring John Goodman, Holly Hunter, and Richard Dreyfuss, tells the story of a firefighter pilot who battles blazes in the sky. The narrative weaves together a romance between the two lead characters, with Goodman providing comic relief while also bringing depth during a poignant moment involving a character's death. However, I found the film to be excessively lengthy. It drags on more than necessary, which may alienate general audiences. Critics might view it favorably due to their professional obligation to analyze films, but for the average viewer, it feels overly extended and sluggish. It's not a movie I would choose to revisit; while it had its moments, it ultimately doesn't resonate with me. It appears that the film was attempting to ride the coattails of "Top Gun's" success, but it fails to capture the same energy or deliver a comparable experience. Dreyfuss, in this scenario, is like a less charismatic version of Tom Cruise, which made it unlikely for the film to live up to "Top Gun's" high standards.

All in all, a very good film. It tells an engaging story. Occasionally it resorts to slightly silly events (like Dorinda dancing with all the firefighters), but on the whole it is both engaging and believable. Well acted by all, including Audrey Hepburn, it gives viewers a very slight idea of the hardships and actual hell hot spots and tanker drivers (pilots) go thru.

Richard Dreyfuss, John Goodman, and Holly Hunter Love is forever always eternal Steven Speilberg directs making a pre-Ghost like story Pete is a firefighter pilot and has a girlfriend Dorinda But unfortunately his plane explodes and he’s deceased Another spirit Hap explains to him that someone else is filling his spot Pete’s job is to mentor a new pilot all while he ends up falling in love with Dorinda which doesn’t please Pete in the slightest It takes over a half hour for the plot to kick in The film is more of a slow emotional journey and there’s excellent flying scenes It’s a story about learning to let go and living the rest of our lives without fear and opening up to love again

It's not bad. If anything it's a bit fustrating because it's ALMOST good. The pieces are there but it just doesn't fire all the way it needs too. The cinematography is easily the best thing. Great lighting, camerawork, a very memorable location, and really good special effects. Spielbergs direction is all over this. There are some scenes like the homeless dude that makes no sense and is stupid, the first half scenes with Pete & Dori that are a bit too slow and dragged out, and some of the other love scenes can be a bit too sentimental. The acting also is good. Hunter gets better as things go along. Johnson is alright but easily the worst thing. He's goofy, wooden, and just feels unnatural at times compared to everyone else. Goodman, Dreyfuss, and Audrey Hepburn are great though. Everything else isn't bad here. It really has a problem of Pete being lost and unsure so the script feels very unsure of where it wants to go once he is killed. Sometimes it's about Ted & Dori, sometimes it's about Pete coming to terms with his death and learning the rules, sometimes it's about Ted getting his career going, and other times Dori & Pete's relationship. But it never really ties it all together in a cohesive fashion. Some better than others. It feels almost like you could take Ted out of the entire thing and just keep it on Dori & Pete and it would work significantly better. Also, having more of Harp explain the rules and provide a bit more guidance here and there would've helped as well with this as the rules aren't exactly clear at times. Just some more structure and focus really would've gone a long way here. Also, it can be a bit too sentimental at times but it's not ridiculously over the top with it. Some of the music gets a bit to sappy, sometimes it's a bit too slow, and other times it repeats itself a little bit too. The humor moments also can be a bit to on the nose and feel like Dad type of jokes too. It's a ghost fantasy and a romance that is well directed but lost at key points. The fire scenes are really good though too as a sidenote. Anyone who is a die hard Spielberg fan, fan of any actors in this, or 80's romances may wanna take a look at this. There are better ghost stories and romances out there though.

I saw this movie in 1989 in the theater. I was not the kind for going to see love stories at the movies, however, the premise and actors involved intrigued me. I will always remember and think of this film when I think of a love story. I believe this was Audrey Hepburn's last film and I will love it always.

this movie is a test for your patience.

Dec 23, 2023

ok, holy hunter is good but I cant say the same thing for the rest of the film

Dec 22, 2023

I normally really John Goodman but he thinks he was in Rosanne

Dec 21, 2023

the film doesnt have right tone for the subject matter. grief and losing loved ones are tough topics to make it really engaging.

Dec 14, 2023

It has the reputation for being one of Spielberg's worst movies and it is hard to disagree with that assessment. There are a few moments of pure technical filmmaking that remain memorable but the rest of the movie just oozes the kind of sentimentality that never feels honest.

I really wanted to like the film. Because it had good review. Losing a loved one is never easy and the emotions are deep. Always is never romantic or emotional

Dec 6, 2023

the only good think about this film is Holly Hunter.

Dec 3, 2023

the film is trying to be funny and emotional at the same time without exploring feelings like grief and missing loved ones.

Holly Hunter and Richard Dreyfuss are a quirky romantic pair in this love story with a heart-tugging twist. This is one of my favourite movies. Memorable visuals, lines, and the overall message is so good.
