Here is a photoplay which carries a wallop in every scene. Without doubt, it is as mighty a weapon against war as any infernal machine might be for conflict. After seeing it, there can be few to argue in favor of shedding the blood of any nation's youth.

No film detailed the horrors of World War I better than Lewis Milestone’s All Quiet on the Western Front. A technically groundbreaking film that doubles as an extremely powerful anti-war message. Just as compelling in its time as it is today.

There's an unusual rawness to the movie that's even more jarring than the pre-code sex and violence. The performances don't feel mannered or controlled which is why the movie is still a harrowing viewing experience.

I was surprised to learn that this was a Hollywood product as it has the look and feel of a European production. The script, acting, special effects, and props are as good as it gets for 1930. It's sad that this film got suppressed in nearly every corner of the globe at the time. Eventually, the story came to be appreciated by both American and European audiences; despite the characters being the evil "Hun" of 1914-'18 they could have easily been French, British, or Americans suffering the same horrors. The 1979 remake with Richard Thomas and Ernest Borgnine was also good. It was actually made for TV but rises above that humble medium.
