The story of two sisters trapped in a shark cage deep underwater is simple but very effective. The movie builds suspense really well, making every moment feel dangerous and stressful as they try to survive with limited oxygen. The underwater setting adds to the fear, and the sharks create constant tension. The performances are solid, and the film does a great job making the audience feel the pressure and isolation of being stuck in the ocean. The film stars Mandy Moore as Lisa, a woman who is both afraid of sharks and desperate to impress her ex—so naturally, she decides the best way to do that is to dangle herself in the middle of a shark buffet. Her sister Kate, the chaos goblin of the movie, is the one who says, “C’mon, it’ll be fun!” which is always the phrase spoken right before things explode, sink, or get eaten. Once they’re dropped into the water, the cage snaps faster than a cheap selfie stick, and they plummet 47 meters down—hence the title, in case you were hoping it was a romantic comedy. Down there, it’s dark. It’s scary. The oxygen is running low. And the sharks are basically underwater linebackers with anger issues. The entire movie becomes the most stressful game of “don’t die” ever filmed. Here are the film’s main lessons: Never trust a vacation idea that starts with “It’ll be safe!” Sharks are always hungry. Even when you’re not on the menu, they’ll consider an exception. If your oxygen tank says ‘low,’ that’s not a suggestion. Sisters will get you into terrible situations AND try to get you out… usually. The movie does an excellent job of creating tension. Every shadow looks like a shark. Every sound feels like a shark. And the twist ending? Oh, the twist. See more Flynn S @Flynn194 Sep 7 I actually thought this wasn’t bad.I was pretty much on the edge of my seat the whole time and the jumpscares where all good.Though the film did well keeping us pretty entertained (considering they where in a cage the whole time), nothing else really happened other than escaping the sharks making every scene very similar.The ending was decent. See more e l @RT12611919 Jul 21 So, the dialogue is not great, and the sibling relationship between the sisters is super simplistic. But it is clear that the sisters do love each other, which is part of what matters in the film. However, it is not believable that Kate would want Lisa to accept so much risk just to get back at the boyfriend who dumped her...so why does this matter? It doesn't really. The point is, although the setup is ridiculous, although clearly no sister would act like this, and no one would participate in a sport where you have to take a ridiculous risk in a ridiculously flimsy cage...the sisters do clearly love each other...and that's why this movie is good in spite of the ridiculous aspects. You do feel, on several occasions, that they honestly want the other sister to thrive, and both the sisters leave the safety of the cage to help the other sister. So, this is why this movie works, in spite of the ridiculousness. The suspense is good, the photography is good, each harrowing situation is well designed. It's overall a well-made movie, and you are not expected to expect good dialogue...because it's a horror movie about two girls and many sharks. It's very good for what it is. The ending is horrible but it's a better ending than what Lisa thinks happens. So, although the ending is nasty (hint: it's a horror film), it is an appropriate ending for a movie of this genre.
