In the years before the Civil War, Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from upstate New York, is kidnapped and sold into slavery in the South. Subjected to the cruelty of one malevolent owner (Michael Fassbender), he also finds unexpected kindness from another, as he struggles continually to survive and maintain some of his dignity. Then in the 12th year of the disheartening ordeal, a chance meeting with an abolitionist from Canada changes Solomon's life forever.

Another reviewer said it well- torture porn. It’s made in hatred. And it’s pretty unbelievable that humans would act like animals to one another. I don’t buy it, I don’t care what the source is. Just glad I didn’t pay to sit through it. But I liked how the righteous Brad Pitt comes along to redeem the evil whites. Whew.

Ok, this isn't my cup of tea- I don't particularly care about the evils of white men of long ago- they are the evils of ALL men throughout the ages. This movie was excellent, to be sure, and I'm giving it 4 1/2 stars and it's a must have in your collection- but I think Amistad was probably a better 'slave' movie. I also think giving it the best movie oscar was kinda huh? when you look at a few of the contenders. Wolf shoulda got it. All that being said- it's a must watch. It's sad when you see the potential for the end of slavery in America and what black Americans could've become/ and what they actually became. Ugh!
