Director Zhang Yimou’s Chinese romance drama The Road Home (1999) is truly a kind, patient, and considerate story of love. Yimou’s direction is breathtaking with these sweeping forests, vast roads, and blistering winds that make for a harrowing backdrop to his cute love story. I loved all of the close-up shots of Zhang Ziyi’s determined face to see the man she loves. Composer San Bao’s romance theme is enchanting and memorable. The Road Home feels like a fairy tale with writer Shi Bao’s romantic narrative of a shy country girl who falls in love with a young schoolteacher. Zhang Ziyi is gorgeous, heartbreaking, and heartwarming as the young girl Zhao Di. Seeing her running, cooking, waiting, and listening for the young teacher is very touching. Even when the outcomes are apparent, the journey of the main leads is filled with wonder and unpredictability. The highly creative and clever visuals successfully bring a setting and atmosphere to life that is highly captivating even when very little is occurring with the main story.
