The plot follows the standard "overprotective dad" blueprint, yet it avoids feeling stale because Steve Martin is super charming, as usual, balancing frantic physical comedy with genuine, tear-jerking sincerity. It’s a sugary, polished slice of 90s nostalgia that succeeds simply by letting its lead actor do what he does best. I got mad at the ending. It took me 30+ years to watch this and I felt like I was tricked. It's as if Steve Martin didn't dare give us "the father-daughter comedy"; but, at the same time, the film is imbued with a sensitivity that keeps you hooked. It will resonate with all fathers, and daughters will say their fathers are like that (or even more intense). The film mostly elicited forced laughter from me; however, it's simple and charismatic. Because it presents a relevant and realistic theme, it's perfect for making me thank my father for so much. And, obviously, you can't deny these heartwarming performances. The story is OKAY, but it centers on Banks, a husband and father who seems totally and completely uncomfortable with his role in life. The role he chose, mind you. It’s syrupy and tries too hard. I liked it as a kid, but now, as a father of daughters, George Banks suuuucks. Uninspired, unfunny, idiot. Learns his lessons, but only with help of every trite, flat, prop character around him.
