The products of a genetic experiment, fraternal twins Julius (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and Vincent (Danny DeVito) are separated at birth. Their mother, Mary Ann (Bonnie Bartlett), is told they're dead. Now Vincent, an unscrupulous street hustler, ekes out a living in Los Angeles. Julius, raised by a scientist (Tony Jay), grows up humble, intelligent and strong, but very naive about the larger world. When Julius learns of his mother and brother, he heads to Los Angeles to find his family.

What a concept: Cast pumped-up Arnold Schwarzenegger and pint-size Danny De Vito as twins separated at birth. Funny, huh? Sure is, hilarious even, for about five minutes. But the 102 minutes remaining are a stretch for one joke.

I think this film is unfairly maligned. Sure, it's air headed 80s nonsense but it lets you know that right at the start and if you keep watching it's your look out. De Vito and Schwarzenegger are charming (although De Vito's character is far from perfect) and riff off each other well. A one trick pony perhaps, but the trick is good.

It's got that charm, easy watching family feel that all Reitman flicks seem to have. It's extremely light hearted, actually funny every now and thand and get a laugh, and honestly it's good at certain points which is a miracle given just how insane/crazy/farfetched the plot is. The 80's music is good and catchy a bit. DeVito is great in this and probably the best thing acting wise. Everything else is honestly half decent. The problems are numerous though. The plot is just again ridiculous, over the top, and really not clever at all. I think there is a message maybe underneath this about family being more than just genes but it gets lost terribly in the overly complex plot and cheese. The whole jet engine/assassin plotline feels underdeveloped and a distraction. The comedy itself is very much hit or miss. 65% miss 35% a laugh. But honestly what carries this throughout is the best moments is when Devito & Arnold are just...doing stuff together and bonding. The simplest moments are when t

This movie is just cementing my suspicion that my partner picks total sh#t movies. Complete waste of time, maybe I would’ve been entertained if I were a confused 13 year old who still enjoyed colouring books and ate crayons.

The best comedy of the 1980s, hands down. De Vito is laugh out loud funny and this is Schwarzenegger's finest hour. Exceptional. The king of all feel good movies.

Synopsis
