Great movie, not a complex concept but they fleshed it out. Good cast, no real complaints. I feel like this is the normal Kevin Spacey type role of being the guy in power. Would watch again just not anytime soon.
An entertaining thriller.
Rounders for the next generation. Semi-true story but watch out for all the white-washing. A fun watch, but too focused on the characters rather than the more interesting gambling story thread.
I'm somewhat closer to the popcorn meter than the critics here. It's slick but a little frustrating - maybe I just wanted them to get away with it scott free, maybe it seems a little unlikely that Laurence Fishburne tortures card counters in a back store room, maybe the lead character just isnt likeable enough to want him to win. It's still a bloody good movie.
Honestly didn't expect for this movie to be that good. I really liked the whole plot of the movie and the way things came out at the end but the whole experience watching this was unreal. Would reccomend it 11/10.
The best gambling movie that I've seen
Not to farfetched, moved away from a generic gambling movie, casting was good, enjoyed the story enough to watch more than a few times.
Interesting idea but it becomes very repetitive and boring.
Despite its flaws, I absolutely love this film. From the first scene in the MIT classroom with Ben's explanation of variable change, I knew that I was hooked. Watching intelligent people outsmart an unbeatable system is enthralling and exciting. Jim Sturgess had a strong performance as the socially awkward yet genius mathematician and Spacey's deliberate and controlling mentor was well executed. While the climax was slightly underwhelming and the character development was nonexistent for any student not named Ben, I was still invested in the story itself. Similar to Free Guy and Ready Player One, I was a little bored with moments in the "real world"; in this film, the "real world" being Boston with the game being the casino life in Las Vegas. It was especially interesting to see the tonal shifts in both behavior and color as the characters bounced from one setting to the other. In spite of the weaknesses in storytelling, 21 is an anxiety driven, edge-of-your-seat film that I find myself repeatedly drawn to. The precept of the characters not gambling but following a specific set of rules and playing a system was fascinating to me. It is because of this intriguing premise that I am continually drawn back to this film.
This would have been better if the story would a focused on the actual math vs game or how the little guy could have an edge. However, it was watered down like most scripts with obligatory romance and unneeded melodrama.
This movie had a lot of potential with a good cast, but instead is a simple normal melodrama that happens to be centered around Vegas and blackjack.
One of my favorites movies. I think is a really entertaining movie. Las Vegas , rich people and a master plan makes it fun.
I enjoyed this very much. But the one problem I found was there was some plot holes and unfinished plot lines. I wish they explained the end better and what happened to everyone. It would have made the end of the movie so much better.
This stories plot was great, however it left us curious from time to time, there were multiple plot holes and unfinished plot lines that I do wish could have been more complete. These however did not effect the entire movie. This story gave a rags to riches archetype for a few reasons, Ben the main character (Jeff Ma is who Ben is petraying) has little to no money, or wealth in general, but is also dismissed by most people. I enjoyed the character development how ever some could have been more complete. Many good quotes throughout the movie left us with figurative language making a more enjoyable film. This story had many foreshadowing quotes and scenes which gave us a better understanding. Overall I enjoy this movie and would give it 3.5/5 stars.
The plot of the movie, 21, was mid. There were some plot holes that made the movie seem a little stupid. Like if he was so smart, why didn't he keep his money in a safer place? I also wished they would have developed other character relationships such as Ben and Jill and Ben and Miles other than mainly focusing on the development between Ben and Mickey. I also wish the movie was more true to the actual story, such as the casting to look more like the real team, and I would've liked of the names to be the same as the real team. This story is an overcoming the monster story. Ben joins the team to earn money for Harvard, and the monster he has to overcome in society. It's also a rebirth story since this experience grows and changes Ben's character and he learns from his mistakes in the movie. Overall, this movie wasn't very interesting, It was just a team of broke college students playing poker and getting revenge. This movie didn't have anything in it that made me feel it was a brilliant idea.
The movie 21 could have been written better. There were way too many plot holes within the movie which made things hard for people to figure out. Due to this movie being rushed as they made it seem as if the story wasn't lining up. Because they put the climatic moment towards the end which really doesn't make things build up since the movie is almost over. They did a good job at twisting things. I would've never thought Professor Mickey would have been the antagonist of the whole movie. I thought it was the head security of the casino, so they did a really good job at confusing. But the ending wasn't good, nor bad I just feel as if it could have been done a little bit better.
With Kevin Spacey on the cast and a beginning that puts a lot of effort into inducing a cerebral air, the movie still fails to properly pull the viewer in. Most of the immersion is broken right at the start because of clichés and dumbed-down math that was written to sound impressive. Throughout the movie, there are references, both direct and indirect, to other classics such as The Girl Next Door, Risky Business, and Ferris Bueller's Day Off. While those are all neat homages, they only add to the movie's unoriginality. Despite all those shortcomings, the movie still contributes an interesting story arc. The classical "I'll be your friend, girlfriend, or father figure as long as I can make a financial profit" and "Nerdy guy gains social confidence, meets big world, gets beaten down, learns life lesson"
I've watched this movie multiple times and it is one of the most exciting, feel good movies I've ever seen. It's as if you are right there with them, living the life of a card counter.
85/100 - great movie, good lessons, apt description of casinos and counting cards at the time.
