Greg Dean Schmitz

Tomatometer-approved critic
Biography:

Greg Dean Schmitz is a Wisconsin native best known for creating the website Upcomingmovies.com in 1997 as one of the most popular early online sources for finding information and opinions about movies (often many years) before they were released. In 2002, Schmitz moved his site to Yahoo! Movies as Greg's Previews of Upcoming Movies. In the mid 2000s, Schmitz experienced health problems, which led to Greg's Previews shutting down in 2007. Schmitz rebounded in early 2008 by taking over the Weekly Ketchup at Rotten Tomatoes, which he continues to publish each Friday afternoon. Schmitz has also in the past been a contributing columnist for Fandango, was a founding member of the Online Film Critics Society, has appeared on The Howard Stern Show, filmed a pilot for MGM Television, and has been quoted in many major publications.

The Passion of the Christ (2004) 49% 3/4 EDIT “I can't bring myself to condemn this film... [Gibson] made the film he was inspired to make, which included writing, directing, producing, financing and marketing [it] himself” – Greg's Previews at Yahoo! Movies Feb 26, 2004 Full Review 28 Days Later (2002) 87% 3.5/4 EDIT “I've never seen a vampire... but a gang of swarming, bloodthirsty people... now that's scary. And so is this movie.” – Greg's Previews at Yahoo! Movies Jul 1, 2003 Full Review Hulk (2003) 63% 3.5/4 EDIT “Ang Lee's treatment is deadly serious, but a lack of winking humor is appropriate in the case of this dark heroic tale, and the action sequences are riveting, thrilling and cathartic.” – Greg's Previews at Yahoo! Movies Jun 21, 2003 Full Review A Decade Under the Influence (2003) 77% EDIT “an entertaining introduction of the "auteur directors" that emerged from 1968 to 1978” – Greg's Previews at Yahoo! Movies May 19, 2003 Full Review The Guys (2002) 74% EDIT “Besides the fact that it's about 9/11, it's also an effective film because you learn something about the lives of the firemen who are willing to lay down their lives for our safety, which was true long before the year 2001” – Greg's Previews at Yahoo! Movies May 19, 2003 Full Review Lost in La Mancha (2002) 94% EDIT “If something about you causes you to root for Terry Gilliam too, you should definitely seek this film out” – Greg's Previews at Yahoo! Movies May 19, 2003 Full Review Song for a Raggy Boy (2003) 67% 3/4 EDIT “If this had been fictional, I probably would have been harsher on the story, but since it's a true story, what would have been a weakness can be perceived as a strength” – Greg's Previews at Yahoo! Movies May 2, 2003 Full Review MC5: A True Testimonial (2002) 93% 3/4 EDIT “the story of the MC5 is one that is trapped between art and politics... just like they were” – Greg's Previews at Yahoo! Movies May 2, 2003 Full Review Prey for Rock & Roll (2003) 58% 3/4 EDIT “an effective musical drama about the dream that female rockers out there are still pursuing, often for years... that particular story is not told that often, which makes this film worth seeking out” – Greg's Previews at Yahoo! Movies May 2, 2003 Full Review The Punisher (1990) 25% 1/5 EDIT “The only positive spin I can put on this movie is that if bad comic adaptations like it hadn't been done in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Marvel never would have needed to have its current, high-quality big-screen resurgence.” – Greg's Previews at Yahoo! Movies Apr 28, 2003 Full Review X2 (2003) 85% 4/4 EDIT “Would this sequel not just live up to being a sequel of the first film, but even more closely live up to the expectations of fans, some of whom have been fans for over three decades? YES.” – Greg's Previews at Yahoo! Movies Apr 28, 2003 Full Review The Real Cancun (2003) 34% 3/4 EDIT “Somewhere between Jackass with girls and an R-rated version of MTV's The Real World ... Better than The Bachelor, Joe Millionaire or American Idol.” – Greg's Previews at Yahoo! Movies Apr 22, 2003 Full Review New York in the Fifties (2000) 100% 3/4 EDIT “” – Greg's Previews at Yahoo!
