The Iron Lady Reviews
As usual, Meryl does a meticulous job of reflecting the perspective of her character. The root of MT's personality was exposed. The relentlessness was represented fairly by showing from whence her nature is cultivated and how in some instances it can be an asset. Conversely , the movie honestly examines the cold, shallow thoughts that support such a stern perspective.
To show the entire life of a towering figure of demonstrated strength, decisiveness, intellect and historical significance entirely through the lens of her dementia in later life is a substantial distraction from her life story and achievements. It takes the edge off her story as though the director was trying to diminish her capabilities and achievements. btw, Meryl Streep was outstanding and made the film.
The movie is rather heavy on the anguish of memory loss and the confusion between past and present to a point that the biography of her most relevant years ( in the public domain) falls a bit flat. Great scenes, undoubtedly, but as a whole the movie doesn’t really blend. We can’t be simultaneously worried about the old lady who’s frail and confused and remember that her stronger years. That constant back and forth is exhausting and doesn’t allow the space to appreciate one or the other. The same could be said about her perspective and other perspective about her. We get to see how she feels and remembers, and suddenly we see that her daughter seeing her in the current time at times to realize she was confused. I think all these different angles make the movie a bit unreadable and uncomfortable.
While the performance of Streep makes this worth investing in, be prepared this is a slog at times with it's story that goes nowhere.
A missed opportunity. The focus was mostly on Mrs Thatchers failing memory and her talking to her dead husband with some flashbacks of her past. The focus really should have been on her career and accomplishment's which would have made for a superior film. The acting was very good. unfortunately it was the wrong script.
The best makeup and hairstyling ever done in a movie!
If it had been just two hours of Streep's Thatcher speaking to the audience about her life, it would have been better then this confusing-if boring- fever dream.
Admittedly I wouldn't be caught dead watching this but by the description it sounds like propaganda for an awful prime minister.
I'm rather surprised at the low rating for this film. Meryl was brilliant in her performance and breathed life is a very complicated character. How Thatcher's dementia is handled is painful to watch. I found myself fast forwarding through those scenes. Overall, I loved the film and have watched it several times.
This movie did its best to portray an even handed cinematic biography of Margaret Thatcher. Meryl Streep gave a stunningly accurate performance as the late Prime Minister. In particular Streep captured the mannerisms and voice of Thatcher so perfectly it was very easy to forget you were watching a representation and not the actual Iron Lady herself. This is an important movie for a real life representation of a female in a position of power. In my estimation it was the politics of Margaret Thatcher that outweighed her accomplishments for many critics of this film and that is both critical and feminist tragedy. Jim Broadbent's portrayal of the famously secretive Dennis Thatcher captured what I have always viewed to be the personality of the late Mr. Thatcher be it realistic or not. Director Phyllida Lloyd did a good job in setting up scenes which were conventional yet effective. However the portrayal of a late dementia-ridden Thatcher felt somewhere between a pathetic attempt to gather sympathy and a cheap ploy to mock an elder in decline. Be it realistic or not to be portrayed in that state on film is truly saddening to watch and could have been handled as a prelude to the conclusion rather than being interspersed through the whole film as the way Thatcher 'recalled' the major events of her life. Overall the film is important for women, men and anyone who wants to see a masterstroke in political power.
MERYL STREEP xln just like Lady Thatcher. Flashback early confused & befuddled me, but later much better. Highlight was FALKLANDS, of course. Then when her party in Parliament removed her as leader. & Sadness with husband dying. Reagan not mentioned? Margaret would not have liked a lot of this, & Meryl didn't like MT. Never saw it til on PBS TV Fri nite 2.25.2022
Her Performance was through the roof! she got the oscar for it! could be a bit repetitive at times. and sometimes a bit over the top with this story being told. but will always give Meryl credit when due. her performance is unmatched!
Meryl Streep's performance is unsurprisingly perfect but the screenplay is mediocre. I believe the film does a successful job of showing Thatcher's decline into dementia but Streep is all dressed up with nowhere to go on this one. The film suffers from the filmmakers not showing their true opinion on Thatcher and remaining neutral, something few people if any at all have done.
If you were expecting this movie to be a biography on the late Margaret Thatcher, prepare to be disappointed. What you will see is her as a senile old lady having a lot of flashbacks, mentally interacting with her deceased husband, and really interacting with her surviving relatives. There are a few short flashbacks of her life and political career beforehand, but not enough to make the viewer learn much about her. You see her surviving the bombing of Britain, the fact that she is a grocer's daughter, bits of her romance with her future husband, her going into the men's world of politics, her becoming Prime Minister against expectations, and major scenes from that era, such as her economic policies, the Falklands War, and the end of the Cold War. But those are all barely covered, and you don't learn about her education or how she formed the political views she did, or what effect her policies had, good or bad. The movie is akin to making a biography of the racing horse Seabiscuit where he is taken to the glue factory.
Margaret Thatcher declared her non-interest of watching dramatized films and programs about herself, something to agree her preference from watching her cinematically formal introduction for those who unheard of her to find her intimate portrait told in jumbled storytelling. What to mutually agree on is the reasoning of viewing this is another stardom showcasing for Meryl Streep's emotional strength that not only bolsters the supposable entertainment value but genuinely fuels the titular prominent figure under mental originality with an appreciative degree as Thatcher's only source of respected enjoyment if she decided to view it. (B)
I do not care what the critics think. I loved this film. It was fun and well acted and very well told. 5 stars!
The most amazing transformation I've ever seen, which is 100% of why you should see this film.
Streep's performance was spectacular. But beyond that, the film is flimsy and boring. This is shocking when you consider the strong character and historical material surrounding M. Thatcher that the director had to work with. There is no point of veiw, no feeling or heart...and not even an exploration of the ideas Thatcher was famous for championing...very little exploration of the characters. Basically, a disappointment.
